Chapter 149 Knowing Who He Really Is
- “Chester Newman...” At that moment, Emilia Parker tugged lightly at Chester’s sleeve. Chester blinked, turned back, and looked at her. Only when he gazed at the woman he loved did that softness appear in his eyes. Emilia felt his eyes on her and ducked her head, shy. “Chester, isn’t this a bit too harsh on them?” She hesitated, but still spoke up. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, and her voice was small. Emilia knew Chester had founded the new Parker Group for her sake—and so the Newman Family might accept her. Of course, there was some payback aimed at the Parker Family in the mix too. For what the Parker Family had done, Emilia was furious. But when Lin Wen mentioned Grandma, Emilia’s heart softened. Chester paused at her words. Right. Everything he was doing now—restarting Parker Group, even tearing down all of the Parker Family’s businesses—was the consequence they had brought on themselves. The Parker Family deserved what was coming. Besides, last night Emilia had been so upset she fainted onto the bed. She didn’t even eat dinner and slept straight through. If Chester hadn’t pushed her to eat today and lied that he’d take her out job-hunting, she might have spiraled for days. Chester wanted to teach the Parker Family a lesson. But he’d overlooked one thing: no matter what, the Parker Family were still Emilia’s family. “Okay. I promise. I’ll give them a way out.” Chester cupped Emilia’s cheek, voice tender. “Thank you, Chester...” Chester turned to Luther Ziegler beside him. “The businesses that originally belonged to the Parker Family—don’t touch them for now. And send the workers who came from the Parker Family back. From now on, the Parker Family’s business can only be this big, no more.” Chester meant the Parker Family had to return all industries that used to belong to the Ye Family. “Got it. I’ll take care of it.” Luther nodded and pulled out his phone. Lin Wen panicked at that and lunged to block Chester. “No. Why? These are all the Parker Family’s industries. Who are you to say you’ll take them away?” “The Parker Family’s industries? And you dare claim them? When the Ye Family was still here, why didn’t you fight them for it?” Chester’s eyes went cold. Lin Wen froze. Fight the Ye Family? He had neither the guts nor the skill. “Before I change my mind—move.” Chester’s voice cracked like a whip. Lin Wen flinched, body jerking aside on instinct. He’d had a sliver of hope, trying to stop Chester. Bringing up Emilia’s grandma had made Emilia bend, after all. Maybe he could push it and have the whole thing slide. But... He hadn’t expected this. He’d heard a little about Chester: a pathetic, timid live-in son-in-law. Seeing him today, Lin Wen felt, deep down, that Chester was not simple at all. Not just Luther—heads of the big families were bowing to him. So when Chester barked, Lin Wen stumbled back, still unwilling to accept it inside. He clenched his fists and stood off to the side, watching Chester, Emilia, and several family heads walk past. A heavy ache pressed on his chest. “Mr. Knott, Mr. Knott, please, say something for us...” Lin Wen spotted Li Dong at the end of the group like he’d found a lifeline, grabbing at him. “Let go. If you’ve got a death wish, don’t drag me into it.” Li Dong’s face soured. “Uncle, please help us.” Lin Feng chimed in. “Don’t call me Uncle. You and Tiantian already broke up. Tiantian doesn’t have you as her boyfriend anymore.” Li Dong’s tone was firm, no room for debate. Lin Wen gaped. He didn’t expect Li Dong to force the younger ones to split. But Li Dong couldn’t waste time; he tried to shake Lin Wen off and glanced at Chester already walking away, anxious. “Lin Wen, you really are dumb. You blew such a perfect chance—and you still don’t get who you messed with.” “Do you know why the Parker Family rose in the first place?” “Do you know how the Ye Family vanished overnight?” “The Ye Family...” Lin Wen jolted, his whole body tense. Small families like his weren’t supposed to know these things. Only after the Parker Family grew did he hear whispers of what happened in those circles. The Ye Family had crossed a powerful house and got driven out of Camdenale. Back then, Lin Wen kept wondering what kind of titan could pull that off. With his status, reaching for—or even imagining—a family like that was impossible. Later he stopped thinking about it. The Parker Family was booming, and he focused on building it up. Still, he kept warning himself: never provoke that powerful family’s young master. If he could, he should cozy up to him. After all, the Parker Family’s current success rode entirely on that young master. He never imagined that young master would be Chester. Emilia’s husband. The live-in son-in-law. If Emilia joined the Parker Family, they could’ve bonded with that powerful young master—even with the powerful family behind him—maybe even become relatives by marriage. But now... it was all gone. “Didn’t you hear what Young Master Newman said? Get out.” Li Dong’s words cracked like thunder, snapping Lin Wen to his senses. He dragged the dazed Lin Wu, not daring to linger, and hurried out. Both of them knew how they had insulted Chester. They didn’t stop until they reached the car. Only then did they breathe. Leaning against the seatbacks, they realized their shirts were soaked with sweat. “Dad, I don’t get it. Wasn’t Chester always a live-in son-in-law? Back in Kinlande, Emilia and Zelda Knott looked down on him. He stayed home all day and didn’t look for work. How did he suddenly turn into a big-shot young master? And I’ve never even heard of a Newman Family that big...” Lin Wen gripped the steering wheel, his voice drained. Today had blown his mind. The workers poached from their family, Chester’s identity—none of it added up. “I don’t get it either...” Lin Wen pressed his fingers to his temples, frowning. “Dad, what do we do now? Are we just going to watch the Parker Family get wrecked?” Lin Wen asked. “What else can we do...” Lin Wen muttered. “You saw it. Those family heads treated Chester with serious respect. We can’t afford to cross someone like that. So no, we can’t fight this. What can we even do...”
