Chapter 1 Endless Insults

  • "Chester, wash the dishes!" Chester Newman's mother-in-law, Zelda Knott, demanded, slamming her fork down with a scowl.
  • "Just a moment, Mom. I need to take out the bathroom trash first…" He called back from the bathroom, pinching his nose as he cleaned the trash bin.
  • "Are you deaf? I said wash the dishes now!" Her face was dark with anger since coming home.
  • Chester trembled slightly, staring at the red-stained tissue in the trash bin, feeling a wave of fury surge through him.
  • "Chester, didn't you hear my mom? Are you trying to upset her on purpose?"
  • Before Chester could respond, his wife, Emilia Parker, chimed in from the living room, her voice laced with blame and irritation.
  • Emilia was stunning, a five-foot-five beauty with an alluring figure. At the moment, she was reclining on the couch, doing a facial massage. Her porcelain doll-like face appeared utterly serene.
  • "What a loser. Today, I played cards with Madam Quinn, whose son-in-law is a high-ranking executive with a six-figure salary. And then thinking of Chester. I can't even mention him without cringing! Raising a dog would be better; at least a dog listens!"
  • Seeing Chester still not obeying, Zelda angrily knocked over the bowl of mushroom soup, the contents spilling across the table and onto the floor.
  • "Chester, what are you doing in the bathroom? Can't you clean the kitchen first? Do you want to drive my mom crazy? Why did I ever marry someone like you?" Emilia shouted. Chester had been a stay-at-home husband for the two years since he married into their family, unable to find a job, bringing her nothing but embarrassment. She didn't even tell her friends that he was her husband.
  • For her, it was utterly disgraceful!
  • In the bathroom, Chester froze in place.
  • For the past two years after he married into the family, despite doing all the housework, he never truly felt accepted by this family. He had endured endless insults and humiliation!
  • Chester's rage finally erupted!
  • He kicked the trash bin, scattering red-stained tissues all over the floor.
  • "Everyone shut up!" Chester stormed out of the bathroom, yelling in fury.
  • Emilia and Zelda were stunned, seeing the usually docile Chester lose his temper.
  • Chester clenched his fists, glaring at them fiercely.
  • Certainly, Chester was the live-in son-in-law of the Parker Family, but he was also the heir to the world's most powerful family!
  • The reason someone like Chester became a live-in son-in-law to the Parker Family was very simple—love.
  • In high school, Chester and Emilia were classmates. During that time, he was undergoing family training, which meant he had no access to his family's wealth or connections.
  • High school life was challenging for Chester; he often took on odd jobs and sometimes had nothing but dry buns for meals.
  • Seeing Chester's plight, Emilia frequently bought him food.
  • Back then, he saw her as a goddess—beautiful, kind, and caring.
  • Five years later, after completing his family training and finishing college elsewhere, Chester planned to marry Emilia in Kinlande. At that time, Emilia's dad fell critically ill, and on his deathbed, he couldn't stop worrying about Emilia and the family's assets, deciding to find a live-in son-in-law.
  • Chester, wanting to simplify things, agreed to become the live-in son-in-law.
  • Over the past two years of their marriage, Chester had meticulously attended to every detail of Emilia's life. He cooked, cleaned, and even utilized his family's resources to solve her problems and shield her from trouble.
  • Chester had hoped his unwavering dedication would eventually win Emilia's heart, but instead, he faced constant derision and contempt.
  • At that moment, Chester realized his efforts were futile.
  • Although he still cared for Emilia, his affection had turned to bitterness.
  • "You're nothing but a live-in son-in-law! Who gave you the right to talk back? If you don't want to work, divorce Emilia and leave the Parker Family!" Zelda, standing in the kitchen, regained her composure and emerged, pointing an accusing finger at Chester.
  • Ignoring Zelda's rant, Chester walked into the living room and looked at Emilia, who was lounging on the couch.
  • The person he had once cherished now felt like a complete stranger.
  • Chester's eyes filled with a mixture of sorrow and anger. "Emilia, I thought that after two years of marriage, my devotion to you would at least earn a bit of your appreciation. Instead, you treat me worse than a dog. Fine, if you think so little of me, let's get a divorce. I'll leave the Parker Family. Is that what you want?"
  • Emilia glanced at Chester with indifference, pausing her facial massage for a moment before resuming, "Chester, are you serious? Do you really want to divorce me?"
  • "Yes. Do you think staying together will change anything?" Chester replied calmly.
  • "Fine, let's finalize the divorce papers tomorrow morning," Emilia said, her expression unchanging.
  • "Great, Emilia. It's a relief that nothing serious happened between you two. With your qualities, I'll find you a wealthy suitor in no time. You'll soon be a rich lady!" Zelda exclaimed with glee.
  • Then, turning to Chester, she sneered, "Have you looked at yourself in the mirror? You're just a live-in son-in-law. Even if you divorce Emilia, it's because she doesn't want you. You want a divorce? Return the money my husband gave you. Do you think you can live here for two years and walk away with that money? That's not happening."
  • "What? Can't pay up? You're nothing but a useless parasite!" Zelda continued when Chester remained silent, even spitting at his feet.
  • He wiped his tear-filled eyes and turned to face the spiteful woman.
  • "There's 45 thousand dollars on this card—more than enough!" He threw a card at Zelda's face.
  • He had reached his limit.
  • How could Emilia have such a malicious mom?
  • "Ha! Does this card even have money? You're just a jobless loser; where would you get money?" Zelda mocked.
  • "If you weren't Emilia's mom?" Chester looked at Zelda with anger. "Hmph!"
  • "What? What are you going to do? What can you do?" Zelda taunted.
  • "Forget it..." He sighed and looked at Emilia. "I'll be waiting for you at city hall tomorrow morning!"
  • With that, Chester changed out of his slippers.
  • "Oh, I won't be coming back. As for my belongings, you can throw them all away!"
  • "Pfft, as if I wouldn't! Who cares?" Zelda scoffed.
  • As he stepped out, Chester glanced at Emilia. "Emilia, to be honest, I regret ever meeting you..."
  • With that, Chester shut the door and left.
