Chapter 10 Naive Act

  • The way Evan addressed her sent shivers down Serena's spine.
  • Just this morning, she was the formal "Ms. Wren" to him, and now, suddenly, it was "Serena"? The speed at which Evan had shed the formality was remarkable, to say the least.
  • What on earth had happened to make his tone change so abruptly and so weirdly?
  • "I was just at the police station," Evan said casually, watching her closely. "The officers asked me who I saw on the side of the road around 4 AM." He knew his sudden shift in tone was a bit shocking, but he was certain what he was about to say next would surprise her even more.
  • Evan's eyes locked on Serena, studying every little flicker of emotion on her face.
  • However, Serena didn't react the way he had anticipated. Her only response was a slight twitch of her brow.
  • Seeing that she remained silent, lips pressed together, Evan's smile deepened. "Serena, should I go back to the police and tell them the person I saw on the roadside at 4 AM was you?"
  • It was clear this whole thing revolved around her. He didn't believe she could remain indifferent.
  • "Go ahead. What do you want?" Serena sighed inwardly, already knowing Evan was in trouble. The moment she ran into him, she knew things would get more complicated. Now her goal was to cut this issue off at the root before it got out of hand.
  • "So, the clever Ms. Wren has been hiding in plain sight all along, fooling everyone," Evan said, his tone half teasing, half impressed. He had already suspected this, but seeing her so calm, so composed in this situation, still surprised him.
  • At this moment, he realized that the woman in front of him was nothing like the rumors suggested.
  • Not only was she not foolish, but she was also remarkably sharp—so much so that it left him stunned. Clearly, her "naive act" had fooled everyone.
  • But why? Why would she pretend to be dim-witted when she was clearly intelligent?
  • "Get to the point," Serena cut him off, her gaze cool as she gave him a glance. She didn't have the patience for his roundabout comments.
  • Evan's smile faltered, his lips twitching in annoyance. He had come here to make her sweat, but somehow, she had flipped the situation on him, leaving him feeling like he was the one on the defensive.
  • Since when did someone manage to seize control of the conversation so easily in front of me?
  • "All I want to know is what earth-shattering thing you did last night that got me dragged into the police station!" Evan said, his usual playful demeanor returning. His curiosity was insatiable—nothing mattered more to him than finding out what really happened.
  • "I don't want to marry your brother, so I slept with a man the night before the engagement." Serena's tone was calm as if she were talking about the weather, completely unbothered by the shocking nature of her words.
  • What she said wasn't the exact truth, but the end result was close enough. She knew this was the quickest way to shut down Evan's questions.
  • She also knew Evan's personality well. If he didn't get answers, he wouldn't stop digging. The more she hid, the more curious he would become, and that would only make things worse.
  • Besides, judging by what happened this morning, Evan had already guessed most of it.
  • Evan froze, shock painting his face. He had considered many possibilities—a setup, a frame-up, anything but this. Never had he imagined she would willingly go to a hotel and sleep with another man
  • And to hear her say it so nonchalantly? He couldn't even begin to process it.
  • "Who was the man?" Evan finally found his voice after a few stunned moments.
  • "I don't know. Does it matter?" Serena's response was as casual as ever, her voice light and unconcerned.
  • Once again, Evan was left speechless. Does it matter?
  • Was she seriously asking that? How could she not know who the man was? And clearly, the man didn't know who she was either. Were they both blindfolded the entire time?
  • Evan stared at her, trying to read her, but her expression gave nothing away. As he continued to study her, he realized there was something captivating about the way her dark eyes gleamed, even behind her glasses.
  • "So, everything happening today is because of you?" Evan's playful smirk disappeared, replaced by a more serious expression. "Do you want me to help you find out who he was? You should at least be prepared for whatever comes next."
  • It was clear to him that she didn't want to be found by the man from last night. For once, he wasn't just teasing but genuinely wanted to help her.
  • "There's a certain type of person who, even if you move an inch, will see the entire picture. What makes you think that moving a mile will stop them from figuring everything out?" Serena's eyes darkened as she looked at him. "Don't forget, the person who was called to the police station today was you."
  • She hadn't expected that man to go to such lengths, even involving the police.
  • She knew that with his abilities, even the smallest slip-up could lead him straight to the truth.
  • So, she couldn't afford to make any moves, nor could she allow Evan to meddle.
  • Evan's face darkened. Did she have to be so blunt? That was a real blow to my pride.
  • What was worse, he had no way to argue with her.
