• The morning air was cool when I stepped out of the apartment. The street was still waking up, the light just beginning to pull the shadows back from the buildings. Julian walked with me, his hands in his pockets, both of us quiet in the way people are when they do not want to break the calm too soon.
• When we reached the boutique, I could see two women standing outside. They were looking into the window, their heads tilted slightly, speaking to each other in low voices. One gestured toward the Kyoto silk as if pointing out a small detail. The other nodded and leaned closer to the glass.
• We slowed our pace, giving them time before unlocking the door. They did not notice us until the key turned in the lock. Then they stepped back with polite smiles, but I could see the curiosity in their eyes.
