Chapter 1

  • Amara POV.
  • Grr… Grr…
  • My phone rings out persistently from my bed. I exasperated tiredness as I stretched my arm to it full length to grab it from the stool, placed beside the bed. But, I couldn't. A sign that I have stressed my body beyond limit. Sharp pang of pain stretches from my skull through the front of my head to the tip of my nose. Another sign my sleep is cut-off abruptly by the ringtone.
  • The ringing stops after a while. I heaved a thank-goodness sigh of relief praying it would never ring again as I buried my head back into my pillow.
  • Few seconds later.
  • Grr… Grr…
  • “O..oh, not this time.” I bellowed out in annoyance mixed with frustration as my voice reigned throughout the room. I knew it had jolted my cat from where he humbly lay.
  • I knew the day had not broken. The light from my phone had partially illuminated the room.
  • I fumbled for my phone, not bothered to check the screen.
  • “Ward 18E patient insists on seeing you. Doctor said she is on her last break.” The voice from the other end hit me like a passing train.
  • “What. Pls when?” I uttered in confusion. I couldn't explain where the energy had come from. I jolted from the bed.
  • “I'm on my way now.” I replied.
  • I picked up my motor bike key. I almost crushed the head of my cat. Thankfully, my foot had landed on his tail. The room was still dark, the light from my phone had not done much. He had scampered to the corner of the room to save his dear life. His piercing gaze lurked on to me dejectedly from the darkness where he had searched for safety, I had suddenly turned to a predator determined to take his dear life.
  • Few moments later, I sprinted into the Pacific hospital. Never in the mood to exchange any greetings. I Moved through the hallway linking to the OR, when I saw a body on a gurney coming from the OR whose face had been covered up.
  • I muster the courage to move closer. I could sense frustration painted on the faces of the two doctors and the nurse that accompanied it.
  • “Sorry we lost her, we thought you arrived here on time, but…” One of the doctors uttered as he patted me. I knew he was lost for words.
  • I felt a lump formed in my throat as I mustered the courage to drag down the sheet off her face, to see her face for the last time.
  • Her once glowing skin, regardless of the aging, had suddenly turned white. So harmless and …
  • Mrs Hathaway had been my backbone within and outside the hospital. She had always wanted me all to her side. Her words of advice in my down moment had been nothing but a guiding light to my path, I used to call her my city mother.
  • An elderly woman who had been battling Coronary artery disease. Doctor had said she needed CABG surgery.
  • “I knew she would be mostly missed by you. She yearned for you to stay by her side throughout the procedure.” One of the doctors uttered.
  • Until I heard a determined footsteps from the corner approaching our standpoint.
  • “You!” The word almost blew off my feet.
  • It was no other than Moxley. I mean Dr Moxley, highly irritating and godforsaken Dr Moxley.
  • I turned and looked as he charged towards me like a raging bull. I was waiting for his next shenanigans. Attention of other two doctors and nurses were on him.
  • “I knew you were useless.” The words hit me like a passing train. I caved in my brow, as my mouth ceased to close in astonishment.
  • “You have never proved me wrong. I knew you won't make it here on time. You have confirmed to me now that you have no Iota of responsibility in you.” Dr Moxley bellowed out pointing his aggressive finger at me.
  • I knotted my brow in surprise as I folded my arms. I tried hard to swallow the little saliva on my already dry tongue.
  • “Listen young lady!” He spat. “I don't care about the rat hole you are coming from…” he roared with anger. He had moved closer to me, we were a few inches apart. His index finger almost entered my eyelid. Our eyes lurked on each other. I won't cowered, nor will I fret.
  • Everybody knew him. A demon in a lab coat and a stethoscope. A man who studies your weak points and patiently waits to launch an attack.
  • “Here we don't treat our patients like a piece of trash. By the way, are you not supposed to be here?”
  • “Who changed the roaster a few hours back.” I replied, my voice calm and steady. Hidden behind it was an intense fury.
  • “You dear not asked me that, young lady!” he bellowed, greeting through his teeth.
  • “Oh I can see.” I uttered, trying to put on a fake smile.
  • I stood my ground, my hands still folded across my chest. “I received the news just now that you purposely changed the rosters to prevent me from seeing my patient, Dr Moxley.” I replied, my eyes locked on his.
  • Tension between us seems obvious as I could read the uneasiness on the faces of the doctors and nurses around us. No one ever could challenge him. But this time, I am ready. I am ready to give all it takes.
  • Dr Moxley's eyes turned beet red, he took a few steps closer to me, the stench of alcohol overwhelmed me. I knew he had gone to take his ‘thing’. “This is my territory and my grandfather built this place. Who the hell are you to question my authority?”
  • “...I am not here to question your authority.” I quickly cut-in, hoping he would give some breathing space, at least to explain myself.
  • “Quiet, you bitch!” He ordered as his thick voice sent some unusual tremor beneath me.
  • “I see that you are growing wings. I am happy to tell you that you are fired.”
  • “Yes!” I clapped back with annoyance.
  • “Thank you so much for firing me because, I won't be part of the ladies you will be getting into their pants anymore.”
  • I knew it hit him in the wrong spot.
  • “What!” He uttered with this disbelief.
  • “You tried to ask me out, which I denied.” I uttered with tense anger. I could see the shock painted on the faces of people.
  • “You have been sending your sex tape to my phone. The other day, I saw you fucking Nurse Nancy in the cubicle …”
  • I didn't finish the statement when I heard a heavy bang on my face, it swung me to the nearest wall as I found myself on the ground. I immediately felt blood gushing out of my nostril. I used the back of my hand to wipe it off. Like as if I have been injected with anesthesia. I stood up.
  • Few people surrounding us had run around Dr Moxley so as not to launch further attacks.
  • “Get the hell out of here now!” He ordered,
  • “Or I will call the security to throw you out.”
  • Our voices had gathered a lot of people. This is what Dr Moxley had been asking for, and I am going to give it to him. I am going to give it to him while it is hot.
  • “Yes, I am getting out but before I do …” I replied.
  • “I turned to the people, ladies and gentlemen, to show me some of the wonderful work our amiable doctor, Dr Moxley, had been doing behind the scenes.” I uttered with a bit of sarcasm.
  • He wanted to launch at me but he had been overwhelmed by three men who had surrounded him. I guessed they all have been waiting for a day like this.
  • I dipped my hands into my pocket to pull out my phone, only to see numerous missed calls from home. Who? My mum.
