  • The next day, Evelyn didn't crawl out from under the duvet until the alarm shrieked at 12:30 PM. Her room was quiet, but her body felt like it had been through a car wreck, blue and purple marks bloomed across her skin like watercolor bruises.
  • How am I supposed to go to work like this? she groaned. Fortunately, her shift at the Island Mall didn't start until 3:00 PM.
