Chapter 5

  • I discover Advocate Daniel standing by the dining room. He wasn't supposed to be here at this hour. Sana and I look at each other as we stand up to greet him.
  • "Good evening, Daniel," I walk towards him as Sana follows me. We both warmly welcome him by shaking hands.
  • "Good evening," he too greets. "I hope I didn't disturb you at this hour," he adds.
  • Why do people on earth say this after they almost ruin anyone's moment? I smile at him casually.
  • "Not at all," I fake being happy. I didn't want him to be here. Since the day it's all started Sana's behaviour began changing. I always love to be real with Sana. However, now we'll have to act like a perfect couple in front of him.
  • "Daniel please come and have dinner with us," she offers him with a smile. What's the need to offer him? I like the version of her that she shows before Eva or anyone else. Though I act like I don't like her boldness, I admire her fighting with people and breaking their jaws rather than being extra sweet to people. She should only be sweet with me.
  • "No. No thanks," he grins. "I actually come here to have a chat with you regarding the case"
  • My heart sank there. So finally we're doing it.
  • "Have a seat," I tell him as I take my seat and he too sits beside me. Sana joins us too.
  • "So, Mr and Mrs Matthews, I had a chat with your father. I hadn't told him about your marriage. But he seemed to be stuck with his decision," he says.
  • "But why? I'm his son. His eldest son. He should've provided me with the share I am supposed to have, without any conditions," I shrug being frustrated.
  • Sana squeezes my hand right then as she looks at me raising her eyebrows. I literally forgot that I'm talking to Daniel who thinks I and Sana are a married couple.
  • "Why are you being so depressed Mr Matthews? You've already fulfilled the condition. Now I'll have to inform your father that you're married and it's the time for him to give you the share of his property he has promised for," He says as he passes some documents.
  • I relax and pick up the file. These are my father's contract papers. According to the latest corrections, it says I'll have to get married and settle down with my family and he's gonna provide me 40% shares of his property. This is the most disgusting thing he has ever done to me. He knew I'm not the kind of person who believes in official or biological relationships. They haunt me. Growing up in a broken family and then competing with my stepbrother for my rights have made me stick to my decision of not getting married ever.
  • I was happy in my life with Sana and my work. And sometimes with mom and Samantha. All I needed was to own shares of Father's property. But he had made this stupid condition. I know why he did that. He wanted me to disagree with his condition and leave my shares for his beloved son Alex.
  • I didn't want to ruin my whole life because of a stupid agreement. I offered a proposal to Sana. And not so surprisingly she agreed to fake our relationship before Daniel. We pretended to be husband-wife and made a false marriage certificate by bribing the officials. Daniel is still in a misconception about us. He is an honest guy. I was afraid of telling him the truth as he would have never helped me and I wouldn't get what I want.
  • "He is just frustrated," Sana tackles the situation as she places his hand on my shoulder.
  • "My father is a jerk," I shrug. "He easily handed over his company to Alex without any fucking agreement. And when I asked for my shares he did this illogical drama"
  • "Relax, Mr Matthews. It's not only you," Daniel says.
  • I look up at him, surprised.
  • "What do you mean?" I curiously ask.
  • "You heard right. Not only you but also Alex was given the same conditions to get the ownership of your Father's company," Daniel added.
  • What the heck is the man doing? What does he want to prove?
  • "Alex and his wife Olivia are married with a contract of 2 years," he says.
  • "What?" Sana exclaimed.
  • "Yes. I have collected their marriage contract which shows that they are not in a serious marriage," he keeps making us freeze by his words.
  • Sana And I look at each other without passing any word.
  • "I've talked with your father and he told me the reason for doing this. He wants his sons to be happy and have a good life. Unlike him who kept confusing himself. According to him, his life was a complete mess. He has never been happy with anyone. However, he doesn't want both of you to ruin your lives," Daniel completes his statement.
  • We remain silent after he clears my father's intentions. Actually, I don't find it a sensible way to make anyone happy. If a single marriage could make humans happy, my father would be the happiest man after two rounds of marriage. But he ends up being alone. Yet I'm focused on my shares right now. Nobody fucking cares about his thoughts. He'll always be a jerk to me. Only his property matters.
