Chapter 40 Mara's Pov

  • I winced as I gingerly got back on my feet, trying not to put weight on my injured ankle. Ryker didn’t seem to notice or care, too busy scowling at me from across the cabin. The smell of something charred wafted toward me, and I glanced over at the makeshift stove.
  • A pan sat crookedly on the burner. The contents were a questionable mix of overcooked meat and sad-looking vegetables. “Dinner’s served,” Ryker announced, his grin practically daring me to complain.
  • I grimaced but bit my tongue, stopping myself from saying anything. My stomach growled in betrayal, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten much all day. Reluctantly, I hobbled over and took a seat at the table. “This looks… edible, manageable,” I muttered, trying not to sound too ungrateful.
