Chapter 207 Get Rid of Her

  • Uncle Fu truly had no way to deal with Aunt Yun. He said one thing, and she took it as gospel. Honestly, the young madam had nothing going on. If something serious had happened, the young master wouldn’t have gone to work without saying a word. From what he’d seen, the young master and the young madam were glued to each other lately. Just yesterday, he caught them cuddling on the couch in the living room. Uncle Fu felt the young madam had changed compared to before—changed for the better. Most importantly, the young master had finally walked out of that old mess. He’d been spending more time at home lately, and his smile came easier. While Aunt Yun was calling Lian Su, Justin Howard was hustling to set a bunch of things in motion. Of course, the busiest one was Briar Keyson. Even though the boss had ordered the shake-up of the Design Department early on, this wasn’t something you could finish in a day or two, or with a few words. Several projects involved working with the Romanov Family, so everything had to be lined up tight and handled with care. Briar never saw it coming. First thing in the morning, the boss called and yanked him out of his warm bed, then told him he had to get it done today. Otherwise, he could pack his bags and leave. So from morning till now, he hadn’t even had time to sip water, let alone crack a joke with the secretaries like he did every day. And on top of that, the boss chewed him out. Again. You could hear Mr. Howard’s displeasure through several doors. “Briar, did I hire you to chat with the secretaries all day?” “Of course not.” Briar’s face twisted with frustration. “But boss, you suddenly said we’re tightening up the Design Department. I mean… I’m swamped.” “That’s your excuse now?” Justin shot him a hard look, annoyed as hell. “I gave you this task more than a week ago, didn’t I? And this is all you’ve got to show me?” “If this is the best you can do, then forget being my assistant. Pack up and get out early.” … Briar felt like the boss had swallowed gunpowder this morning. Not a single word sounded calm. So while he was sulking, he couldn’t help thinking the boss and the young madam must’ve had a fight again. Otherwise, what else could make the big guy’s mood swing this hard? “Why are you still standing there? If you can’t find a decent reason, make one up. Go deal with Xiao Lan. Now.” Briar felt wronged, but he still had to push through. He got to the Design Department, but he hadn’t figured out what to say at all. While he hesitated by the elevator, he ran into Yvonne Shaw. “Assistant Briar?” Yvonne’s voice brimmed with surprise. “What are you doing here?” Sure, they worked at the same company, but it had been a while since she’d seen Briar. Honestly, she was kind of happy to see him. At least right now, she had no clue that Celia Jeane and Justin Howard had written off the idea of anything happening between her and Briar. “Yeah, I’ve got something to handle.” Briar was still keyed up, so even though he usually chatted easily with Yvonne, he sounded pretty down. “Oh.” Yvonne picked up on his mood and felt awkward. “Well, um, you’re here to see our director, right?” “Mm.” Briar’s tone stayed flat. He was here for Xiao Lan. But the boss had told him to cook up a reason, and he hadn’t cooked up anything yet. “Then I won’t bother you.” Yvonne could tell he basically wasn’t listening to her, so she slipped into the Design Department office, feeling deflated. The minute she walked in, she felt the naked, teasing, drama-hungry looks from the gossip crew. They were probably whispering about her slapping her warm face against Assistant Briar’s cold backside again. Yvonne’s chest tightened, and her mood got worse. She couldn’t help thinking of Su Zichen. When she played hot-and-cold with him, did he feel the same way she did now? The thought made her feel cruel. Ever since Su Zichen stumbled drunk into her apartment that night, Yvonne felt off. She couldn’t say what exactly, but something had shifted. “Yvonne, I’m going to find your Director Xiao Lan.” Once Briar finally pieced together a half-decent excuse, he looked up and realized Yvonne was long gone. A glance at his watch told him he’d spaced out for over ten minutes. No wonder she hadn’t waited. Briar steadied himself, then headed to Director Xiao Lan’s office. “Assistant Briar, what big deal brought you down here in person?” When Xiao Lan saw Briar, her expression and tone showed even more surprise than Yvonne’s. Ever since she’d been suspended and then reinstated, she hadn’t seen the assistant at all. But why did Assistant Briar look off today? Her chest tightened. Was something about to go down? “Director Xiao Lan, sorry, but I’m guessing my appearance feels like a nightmare to you.” Briar cleared his throat and went straight to it. “I’m here to ask you to pack up.” “Pack up?” When she heard that, Xiao Lan’s heart lurched. Still, she couldn’t help asking, “Assistant Briar, I don’t quite get what you mean.” “What I mean is,” Briar looked at her coolly, “you can’t keep your seat as Design Director anymore.” He felt shaky as he said it, because the evidence wasn’t fully in place yet. If Xiao Lan pressed him… “Hold on. You show up out of nowhere and drop that on me. Why?”
