  • The kitchen was my domain, even if I was just the maid. I’d spent the morning scrubbing every surface until it gleamed, the scent of lemon cleaner hanging heavy in the air. My hands were raw from the sponge, my knees aching from crawling across the tiled floor to get at the stubborn grease spots under the stove. Sweat beaded on my forehead, and I’d tucked my dark curls into a messy bun, strands sticking to my neck. My uniform—a simple black dress with a white apron—was wrinkled, clinging to my curves, my medium-sized breasts pushing against the fabric, my round hips swaying as I moved. I wasn’t trying to look sexy, but I knew I did, even with soap suds on my arms and a smudge of dirt on my cheek.
  • I was wiping down the stainless steel counter, humming some half-forgotten tune, when the door swung open with a soft creak. I glanced up, expecting one of the other staff, but it was Mrs. Carter, my boss, striding in with her usual air of authority. Her gray hair was pulled into a tight chignon, her tailored suit screaming money, and her sharp eyes scanned the room like she was inspecting a battlefield. I straightened, brushing my hands on my apron, my heart doing a little skip. Mrs. Carter didn’t come to the kitchen often, and when she did, it meant something big.
