Chapter 17

  • EMPEROR ARION
  • I listened to the rushed footsteps long before the door had been pushed open to my study. The intruder's force slammed the door against the wall. The noise echoed through the room.
  • The junior aide was breathless. Trembling, he didn't wait as protocol would have called for. The male rushed towards me as if he didn't care for his well-being.
  • "Your Majesty! The breach. The Serpions. They've escaped. East of the border." He shrieked.
  • There was no bow. No apology. Just pure terror. His eyes were wide and bloodshot. My gaze remained fixed on the aide's left boot. The laces were loose. His clothing was dishevelled.
  • I felt a cold irritation rise in my chest. "Do you believe the Imperial study to be a stable for livestock? Or perhaps a common marketplace where one may simply stumble in without a greeting?"
  • The blood had drained from his face. Only then had he realized his error. "I... I apologize, Your Majesty, but the bioweapons..."
  • "The distance is irrelevant when the failure is absolute," I continued, rising from my chair. I circled the trembling male. "Now, explain why the most secure facility has been breached."
  • "It was not a failure of engineering, Your Majesty! There is reason to believe it was an inside attack. Doctor Ibonic (ee-Bon-ic) and his inner circle. Evidence shows that they engineered everything. Moments before the explosion, they turned off the security system. Video recordings show how they unlocked the cages."
  • "Sabotage. They are traitors." One eyebrow arched as I did everything to control my rage. "Why would they choose such a suicidal course of action?"
  • "I am not sure, your majesty, but the facility has been destroyed. The Serpions have attacked everything that moves. Before I reached the palace, reports suggested that the Black Brigade had been sacked. The movement of the Serpions suggests they are coming this way. They will be here by sunrise."
  • I was standing before my mind had registered what I was doing. "Are you sure?"
  • The aide gulped as he handed me the black device. When I turned it on, I could see every word spoken as it happened. "Wait," I paused the recording. Rewound it a bit. As I replayed it, I spotted one thing I'd overlooked.
  • Over and over, I kept watching the clips. A blur of obsidian and emerald scales zipped past the camera. A scientist didn't sabotage the facility.
  • "Serpion," my nail tapped the screen as I tried to figure out how it was possible. A Serpion out of its cage. They were to be created to obey. Mindless weapons. Yet, what I saw. This was not the case. "How is this possible?"
  • This creature was immense. It was wild and free. Displaying intelligence. What bothered me more was the fact that they had torn through the reinforced plates with a singular strike of their arms.
  • I would have been impressed if the Serpion wasn't attacking what is mine.
  • I gripped the device harder as I watched the wildlings rescuing the other Serpions and my breeders. Even the neoscorplings had been saved. Then the beast dared to look at the camera. A smile grew on its face. A gaze of pure calculated hatred. It knew exactly what it was doing.
  • It slammed the device to the floor; it shattered on impact. "HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?" I roared. The walls shook as my fist struck the nearest wall.
  • The creature had not only escaped; they had dismantled everything with precision. A system that had operated under the last three emperors. Heaving with rage, I looked over at the aide. Cowering to the floor. He had every reason to fear. I was ready to kill anything that got in my way.
  • "Today you live. Only because you are useful. An asset that I need." I hit the floor with a thud as I walked toward the male. I lifted him up by the scruff of his collar. "The Serpions had developed a leadership. They have a champion. If one of them possessed the strength to breach a military-grade seal, then my ASSETS are no longer assets. You are going to stop them from moving forward. Either you succeed or die. I don't care which one comes first."
  • Stuttering, "As you wish, your majesty."
