Chapter 3
- Smith stared at the doctor for a while, shocked and awestrucked by his disheartening revelation.
- It wouldn't have been disheartening if he was the owner of the unborn child in her.
- He couldn't certainly be the father of the unborn child in her.
- He could remember vividly that he had never had sex with her. They were just only husband and wife on signed paper. He alway sleeps on the floor while his wife, Georgina, sleeps on the bed.
- So how did she manage to get pregnant? Who was the father of the unborn child in her?
- He couldn't ignore the pain that stung his heart as his mind reminisced on the questions he'd asked himself. Though she didn't love him, he couldn't believe she could cheat on him. She wasn't supposed to do such a despicable thing.
- Wasn't she cheating?
- The slight bang on the table brought him out of his train of thought. He blinked his eyes and turned to the doctor, who stared at him in confusion.
- "What's wrong with you, Mr Smith?" The doctor, Lincoln, asked as he stared at Smith who was lost in thought.
- "I'm fine. But please can I get the medical report? I mean the pregnancy results," he said, and the doctor arched his eyebrows at him.
- "May I know what you need it for?"the doctor asked, and he scoffed inwardly.
- "I need to see it, that's why I'm asking," he banged his fist on the table which startled the doctor.
- He breath out heavily as he tried to conceal the anger that seeped through him.
- The doctor picked up the telephone on his table and hurriedly punched some numbers on it.
- "Come to my office right now with Miss Georgina's pregnancy test result," he said, hung up on the call, and dropped the telephone on the table.
- Smith played with his fingers as he waited for the nurse who'd been told to bring the pregnancy test result.
- He couldn't wait to see the pregnancy results. He needed to confirm that she was pregnant in that way he would know if she was truly cheated on him.
- He believed even if she didn't love him, she wouldn't cheat on him because he was poor.
- He bit his lower lips as a knock landed at the door. "Come in," the doctor's hoarse voice came out, and a nurse walked in dressed in white hospital coat.
- "Good morning sir. This is the file sir."
- "Drop it on the table and leave," he ordered.
- She bowed her head and walked away.
- "I'm sure you must be surprised that she managed to get pregnant for someone like you after three years of marriage," he said with his voice filled with sarcasm.
- Though the word really hurted him, he pretended as if he didn't hear it.
- That was what he was forced to learn.
- He'd grown up to believe that only the rich and influential people are supposed to be respected and regarded in the society.
- "Can I have it?" He asked coldly.
- Though the doctor was shocked by his question, he cleared his throat and said, "This is the file that you'd requested for."
- Smith snatched the paper from the doctor, yet he made sure it didn't tear.
- PREGNANT TEST RESULT was written boldly at the front page of the papers that he was holding.
- His heart skipped at each line he read. Though he didn't understand much about medical terms, the few words he understood was enough for him to confirm that she was pregnant.
- Tears built at the corner of his eyes as he confirmed it himself. He couldn't believe she could do such a thing to him. He loved her even though she didn't love him. And he'd always believed that she was going to be his but this showed that he was wrong.
- Was it because he was poor? This question was so deep to him.
- With a shaking hand, he returned the papers to the doctor. The doctor couldn't help but notice his poor-looking man expression turned gloomy all of a sudden.
- "What's wrong with you, Mr Smith?" He turned his gaze to the doctor and sighed.
- "I'm fine," he replied coldly as he stood up from the chair.
- "I'd doubt that because you don't look happy. Are you thinking of the money you'll use to celebrate the naming ceremony?"
- "Madam Kate might be nice to help you since the baby is going to be her grandchild," the doctor mocked him with a dry laugh.
- Though the last statement hit him like a ton of bricks but he chose to ignore it since that wasn't his problem at that moment.
- He needed to know how Georgina managed to get pregnant. Though they were married on papers, he deserved to know because he was her husband legally.
- Smith clenched fist tightly, walked out of the office, and slammed the door with a loud bang.
- He headed straight to her ward.
- Getting to her ward, he reduced his fast and harsh pace when he heard a familiar voice in the room.
- "Can't you see that I love you more than your garbage husband does?"
- He gritted it his teeth as he heard the voice clearly. It was Edward Jones' voice.
- "I'm glad you know that I'm married to Smith so I'm not interested in having any relationship with you," he heard her weak voice.
- Her statement made him doubt the pregnancy test result that he even had to look at the paper in his left hand again.
- He shoved it into his pocket.
- "Why can't you leave him alone? He has nothing to offer…"
- He barged in with an angry look on his face, interrupting Edward Jones.
- Edward turned and scrutinized him closely. He couldn't hide how disgusted and angry he was by his presence.
- Why could someone as beautiful as Georgina be the wife of a poor and wretched fellow like Smith? How unlucky!
- However, he was there to claim her and no one was stopping him, not even Smith.
- Edward was dressed in an expensive black Armani suit which fitted the black trouser he was putting on. His Italian branded shoe was glittering. Everything about him stench of wealth.
- Smith gaze darkened as he stared at the beautiful bouquet that his wife was clinging to her chest like her life depended on it.
- He couldn't help but feel jealous and sad knowing that Edward brought it for her.
- He couldn't even afford to buy her such a flower.
- "Oh! He's here. The poor man who can't afford to feed his wife," he said in a mockery tone.
- "Smith," Georgina called in a soft and sweet voice, a voice capable of melting a thousand hearts.
- "Don't pay attention to him. Please try to accept me in your life and I promise to make you happy forever," Edward said and leaned closer to her.
- For a moment, he forgot about the pregnancy results and got mad.
- That fool even had the gut to confess his love for his wife in his presence. He wasn't even afraid.
- Maybe because he was poor and there was nothing he could do for him.
- "What are you doing with my wife, Mr Edward?"
- Though he was still angry that she cheated on him, he couldn't allow anyone to harass her in his presence.
- "And in what position are you to question me?" Edward didn't hide how angry he was.
- How could this poor fellow ask him such a question? If he tried to disturb him again, he wouldn't hesitate to deal with him.
- "I'm her husband so…" Smith voice suddenly trailed off as Edward laughed.
- "Do you mean the husband that can't provide for his wife? I paid for her surgery, and she'll be discharged very soon,"
- He was shocked to find out that Edward had paid before him. Then, why did the doctor collected the money from him?
- Does that mean that he has been swindled?
- He was sad that he had been used. How would he manage to pay the debt he was owing Mr. Adam? And he couldn't request a refund from the doctor.
- He'd been slapped on the face again because he was poor.
- He ignored the thought about the money and turned to Edward.
- "I'd like you to excuse us because I want to have a word with my wife,"
- He didn't forget to emphasize on the last word 'Wife'. He needed Edward to know his place.
- "What! It's ridiculous for you to ask me to leave this place. If someone is supposed to leave then you should be the one," he snarled
- "Please excuse us, Edward," Georgina said, and he smiled.
- Smith thought she was actually talking to Edward until she said.
- "Please excuse us, Smith. I want to talk with him," she said, and he blinked his eyes, unable to believe his ears.
- She was sending him out for a rich guy, Edward.
- "Huh?" His cold and hostile voice came out as a whisper because of the shock which overwhelmed him.
- "She said you should leave. Do I need to call the guards to drive you out?" Edward asked, and he snorted at him.
- "You'll pay for this," he leaned closer to Edward and whispered to his ears.
- He walked out of the ward in anger.
- Though the threat felt meaningless to Edward, he felt somehow worried.
- *
- He sighed deeply as he came down from the black old and outdated bicycle. He parked it carefully at a safe spot in the parking lot.
- He looked up and stared at the banner that was at the big and popular restaurant.
- BIG SPICE was inscribed boldly on the banner that was at the top of the company banner.
- His friend, Thompson, rushed over to him the moment he walked into the restaurant like he'd been expecting him.
- "What's wrong?" He asked, and his friend hissed.
- "I should be asking you that question. Where have you been?"he asked.
- "I was busy sorting out something. What's the problem?" Smith could so tell that there's problem with the way his friend spoke.
- "You should al
- so find a way to sort yourself out before the boss because he's very angry,"
- "I'd to cover up for you but Jackson had to ruin everything before the boss. Now, the boss wants to see you,"
