Chapter 4 Is He My Father

  • The two looked over and saw an anxious Emily with disheveled hair and a pale complexion appearing at the door with an equally anxious Sophia.
  • Once Emily entered the clinic, Sophia glanced at the Rolls-Royce and observed it for more than ten seconds before entering the building. Even when she was a lady from a rich family, she had never sat on a ride like that.
  • When Freya saw her mother and grandmother, the smile on her face instantly disappeared, and she quickly hid the bag of bottles behind her before taking a few steps backward.
  • "You insolent child!" Emily rushed over and started whacking Freya's bottom without saying another word. "Haven't I told you not to leave school before I pick you up? Why didn't you listen to me?"
  • Even when getting her bottom smacked, Freya bit her lip and didn't cry. Instead, she kept repeating, "Mommy, I'm sorry. Mommy, I'm sorry."
  • "Emily, I brought Freya here, so don't hit her."
  • Corey immediately stood up to stop Emily, seemingly distressed for Freya.
  • Hearing his voice, Emily suddenly turned around to face Corey. Her eyes overflowed with fury and hatred as she roared like an angry breast, "What does me lecturing my child have to do with you? Also, who gave you the right to take her away?"
  • "I—"
  • "You, what?" Emily's tone was super aggressive. "Haven't you realized your mistakes after eight years? If you continue to harass my daughter, I don't mind sending you back to jail for another two years."
  • "Mommy, it's not his fault. I ran out on my own, and he even helped me—"
  • "Why are you speaking up for him?"
  • Grievance surged inside Emily like a wave, causing her to break down on the floor. She could not be bothered that Corey was watching as she curled up on the ground and started crying.
  • Emily had asked her boss to lend her money today. He did give her a credit card with 200,000 in it but then asked that she accompany him on an island vacation for a week. Even a fool would know what that meant, so she rejected him and ended up getting fired.
  • Just when she felt the most helpless, she found out her daughter had left school on her own and was actually with Corey. Not only that, but Freya was also speaking up for that b*stard, which instantly gave Emily a feeling that she had lost everything.
  • Upon seeing how helpless her mother was, Freya immediately brought the bottles before Emily. "Mommy, don't cry. I heard Grandpa asking you for money to pay his medical fees and our rental, but I know you don't have money. So, I went out to collect bottles to be exchanged for money, wanting to share some of your burden."
  • Initially, Freya thought her words of comfort could stop her mother from crying, but her words made Emily feel guiltier, and she cried even louder.
  • Looking at Emily crying on the floor, Corey felt bitter inside. From her desperate cries, he realized how hard it had been for her to raise a child for all these years.
  • "Mom, please take Freya outside for a while," Emily instructed expressionlessly.
  • "Okay." Before taking Freya outside, Sophia glared at Corey.
  • After hesitating for a while, Corey still couldn't bring himself to say the words he wanted to, so he silently took out a cigarette and lit it. But before he could take a drag, Emily reached over and snatched it away from between his lips. She skillfully smoked the cigarette, breath after breath, as though the world had calmed down.
  • But to Corey, his heart was filled with even more guilt with every draw the woman took. It was like his heart was being lashed with a whip, making him feel suffocated.
  • "Stop." Corey snatched the cigarette back from Emily.
  • After taking her cigarette away, Emily sneered and sat on the ground, her hair disheveled. She didn't even look at Corey, but she behaved calmly.
  • However, the calmer she was, the more upset Corey felt. He thought he would feel even better if Emily had lashed out at him and slapped him after arriving. But now, the woman was so calm that it was like she had forgotten everything.
  • Corey knew that her behavior meant she had given up entirely.
  • "I'm sorry." After a long silence, Corey spoke up softly. "This is what I owe you."
  • Those words made Emily glance at him with her soulless eyes. She was like a lifeless doll and said nothing. However, Corey could obviously feel the overwhelming hatred she had for him. It was like only by dying could he relieve the hatred she had for him.
  • "Emily…"
  • For a moment, Corey didn't know how he was going to face Emily. He unconsciously reached over, wanting to pull the pitiful woman into his embrace, but his actions ticked her off.
  • The previously calm woman instantly became furious and aggressively threw away Corey's hands. She shot to her feet, growling, "Go away! Don't touch me."
  • "I understand that you won't accept my apology, but please accept my compensation. These are the keys to a boutique villa at Phoenixville and a Maserati. I mean well, and I hope you'll accept them." Corey held out a pair of keys and a deed as he spoke.
  • However, his actions seemed ironic to Emily, and tears unconsciously welled up in her eyes. Could a Maserati and a boutique villa in Phoenixville make up for all the sufferings she had experienced all these years?
  • Due to his actions, the woman envied by all became a temperamental madwoman.
  • She was expelled from her family and had to make a living working at a small company.
  • Also, there were endless family affairs to deal with. Her father was now wheelchair-bound, and her mother had changed from a wealthy woman into a street stall owner.
  • All of this was because of this b*stard before her.
  • Suddenly, Emily gritted her teeth and took a deep breath while glancing at Corey. Then, she grabbed the keys and deed and threw the keys to the ground like she had gone nuts.
  • With a thud, the keys disappeared. Following that, she had a fierce expression as she ripped the deed into shreds, like how she wished she could rip Corey.
  • "Emily! Emily, don't rip that."
  • Sophia suddenly rushed over and fought hard to stop Emily from ripping the deed. "Emily, these are the things that b*stard owes you. Our family wouldn't have become this way if it hadn't been for him. These are what you deserve."
  • "I don't want anything that b*stard gives me!" Emily gritted her teeth and ripped the deed despite Sophia's objections.
  • From the beginning till the end, Corey remained silent and allowed Emily to vent her emotions. If doing so could make her feel better, then he would let her do as she wished.
  • Meanwhile, Sophia glanced at the shreds of paper on the ground, feeling heartbroken. Why say no to such an expensive house? It's clearly that b*stard who caused our family to become this way. It's just a car and a villa. Even with ten cars and villas, he will not be able to make up for Emily's pain.
  • "Listen." Emily's eyes were red as she pointed at Corey. "I don't want your money, and I don't want you to make up for anything. You can keep whatever is yours, but I hope you won't ever come near Freya. She's my daughter and mine only. Do you hear that?"
  • "Mommy." Freya, who had been standing on the side, pursed her lips. "Is this man my father?"
