Chapter 4

  • Colter
  • My wolf wakes up so fast I almost flinch. He is clawing his way out of me, his nails are digging in my flash. It’s borderline painful at first. His nails sink deeper and deeper, tearing my insides. The pain grows with every breath I am trying to take. Then it very quickly becomes unbearable.
  • What the f*ck…
  • My wolf has never reacted this way before, not in any situation. It’s that feeling that’s half pain, half desire. I feel the bright red colour of my wolf starting to spill in my irises, colouring them and I blink a few times to scatter the change. I have never been unable to control the change and now - well, now’s not so easy.
  • My wolf keeps fighting me, struggling for control and I clench my hands in tight fists. I consider getting out of here- I might tell Wyatt I got sick or something. But I don’t. Instead, I turn to look at her.
  • She is beautiful- long dark hair and slender shoulders. The woman is dressed in a black dress and her hair is made into a nice hairstyle. She's talking to one of the servants, but all I can think about is the scent of her skin, her shoulders, her neck, my lips following all her curves and then meeting her lips.
  • “Miss Emma, “ Wyat says, pointing his chin in her direction, “She sometimes comes to check how the maids are. She's amazing. “
  • “Who… who is she?” I ask, still not looking away from her. I notice the way she pushes her hair out of her face, the little frown on her forehead - she is tired. Then I catch the scent of her perfume. I want to go to her and wrap my arms around her. To claim her as mine right now and here. To hell with the investigation or whatever.
  • I can kill each one of those people here in less than two minutes. They won't even know what happened. Forget the police, the d*mn mafia, everything.
  • I push the images of killing innocent people away from my mind, I feel my fangs piercing my gums and I try not to let my teeth show.
  • The maid is telling Emma about pain in her waist - a conversation I am not supposed to be listening to but I can’t help it.
  • “She’s the boss's wife. “ Wyatt explains and that's when I turn to him.
  • You are f*ck*ng kidding me… This can’t be true…no one mentioned a wife. Why the f*ck didn’t my information say anything about it.
  • “They married a few months ago, “ Wyatt says and I want to punch something. Because Emma Levin is married to the man I am investigating. She is also my mate.
  • I look back at her and then she turns in my direction and our eyes meet. And I swear for a brief second I regret not killing everyone like I thought at first.
  • Emma
  • “I did go to my doctor, “ Rosa explains, “But he did nothing. Only you help me, I only trust you, Miss.”
  • “I will see what I can do, “I tell the maid, “I have a friend who is a great neurologist. “
  • “Thank you!” Rosa takes my hand in hers when I catch movement with my peripheral vision and glance sideways. And I see him.
  • That’s him! I swear it’s him. The man from the hospital! His hair is much shorter now and there’s no trace of the stubble but that’s him. I will recognize him anywhere. He is dressed in black clothes just like last time. For a brief second I panic- I know nothing about this man and at the same time this feeling that I've known him forever fills me entirely. And it looks like he knows me too. Something in the way he is looking at me tells me so…But that’s not possible. He wasn’t even conscious. I am sure of it.
  • And why is he here… Does he work for Andrew? Is he one of his men? But if he was, I would have seen him before, right?
  • The very thought of this man working for Andrew makes my blood freeze in my veins.
  • Our eyes lock for a brief second before Wyatt asks him something and the man looks away. He held my gaze only for a heartbeat, but it was so overwhelming my palms were sweaty.
  • He looks even more handsome now. Not only because of his build, his face. But there is something in his eyes that makes it impossible for me to look away. His eyes are so intense I could lose myself in them. My heart is beating so fast it hurts.
  • What am I thinking… He is just some stranger. Handsome, but a stranger. I push all thoughts about him away and turn back to Rosa who keeps telling me about her pain in the waist. I try to focus on her but as Wyatt resumes walking I can’t help but look at the stranger - his broad shoulders, and a strong back.
  • “Miss Emma, are you all right?” Rosa is looking at me.
  • “Yes, yes, “ I tell her quickly. “I just worked too many night shifts in a row, that’s all. “
  • “You should get more rest. “
  • “Yeah. I know. Thank you, Rosa. “
  • Don’t do it, don’t do it… I keep telling myself. Just turn your back on them and get back to your duties of being a nice wife.
  • But I do exactly the opposite.
  • “I will go greet the guests, most of them will start arriving shortly, “ I tell Rosa and head out, following Wyatt and the man. I hurry out of the room and find myself in the corridor. The place is buzzing with movement, excitement and voices. The gala is going to be huge. So many people are walking around I almost get lost in the house I live in. Most of them are famous, all of them are painfully rich.
  • Where did they go.... I can't see them because of the crowd... I glance around when I feel a hand, closing around mine and I flinch. I expect to see Andrew, so I prepare myself for another fight- he won't start a scandal right here and in front of everybody- his reputation is more important than anything to him. And to the whole family, they don't forgive mistakes.
  • But he will warn me about later. But as I turn around I discover it's not Andrew who grabbed me like that.
