• The heavy study door clicked shut behind Isabela, the sound echoing slightly in the suddenly cavernous silence of the corridor. I remained standing just inside the room, the imprint of the last hour heavy upon me. Papa had already turned back to his desk, shuffling papers with hands that trembled slightly less now that the decree had been delivered, the difficult task done. The air still crackled with the residual energy of his pronouncement, Isabela's choked silence, and the unspoken, brutal necessity that had driven it all.
