Chapter 4 Second First Acquaintance

  • "Oof! For what… so… high. Wow ... why is Headmaster live on the tower's top floor?" Lyra said with shortness of breath.
  • Sweat flickered in small streams along the cheekbone. It was urgent to apply some ointment.
  • Taking out a small vial and rubbing it on her face, Lyra took a step and slipped, she wanted to grab the railing, but her hand in the cream slipped, and the girl fell back.
  • She didn't immediately understand how she was hanging just a millimeter away from the sharp edges of the stairs.
  • "You are fortunate today," came a voice from beside her. The owner was not visible but well audible. "A little more, and you would have sent greetings to God personally on the other side of life," the stranger continued. And the more he spoke, the more familiar his voice sounded.
  • "M-m-maybe," she cleared her throat, "maybe the Savior will put me in a human position so I can thank him."
  • "Maybe," he grunted.
  • Lyra slowly regained a horizontal position. She saw the person who had saved her when her legs touched a hard surface.
  • Her eyes widened with horror. It was the same man she had recently wounded with a combat spell in the alley of Brumewick.
  • "Now I'll be expelled. He must be a city guardian who came to arrest me for using a forbidden spell," she thought.
  • The whole spectrum of emotions was reflected on the girl's face as the man hastily began to wave his hands and say:
  • "Breathe! I'm not here to harm you. Everything that happens on the streets of Brumewick stays on the streets of Brumewick."
  • Vienna pounded in her head, and she heard his voice as if through cotton wool. A little belatedly, she realized that he wouldn't harm her. At least, not now.
  • She moved towards the wall because behind her was still the staircase, and her legs could be buckled at any time.
  • "What are you doing here?" she asked the first thing that came to mind.
  • The stranger examined her from head to toe, took a deep breath, and seemed satisfied with something. He said:
  • "Not looking for you, baby. So don't worry," his smile was charming, radiating positivity. Everything was perfect about him, from the black resin hair framing his face to his blue eyes, wide cheekbones, and strong-willed chin.
  • Noticing that the girl was staring at his face, he leaned closer and slowly exhaled in her face:
  • "My name is Adrian," he said, running his hand through her hair and tucking a loose strand behind her ear, "I'm glad to meet you," he said, still looking attractive.
  • "I'm glad to meet you too," Lyra repeated mechanically, smiling and pulling away slightly.
  • Smiling at the girl's embarrassment, he reluctantly pulled away.
  • "You're probably headed to the Headmaster," he suggested.
  • Lyra mockingly arched an eyebrow.
  • "To him," she confirmed his apparent guess.
  • "Then I won't detain you," he said, beginning to go down the stairs.
  • "By the way," he said, "next time, watch where the cream is dripping," pointing to the puddle on the steps.
  • "I'm an idiot! The marble floor and slippery soles are perfect for sliding," Lyra thought, "I almost sent me to the afterlife."
  • "Sure," she replied.
  • Approaching the Headmaster's door, she stared again at the door knocker and wondered what she would say when she disturbed him again. Questions swarmed in her head, betraying her lack of confidence.
  • "Kh-ch," came a sound from Adrian.
  • Lyra jumped and looked in his direction.
  • "Is he still here?" she was surprised.
  • "May I help?" Adrian asked, standing on the same stairs.
  • "If you know how to sneak into the Headmaster's room unnoticed and get his signature on a piece of paper," she answered irritably.
  • "And if I can help, what will I get?" he asked maliciously.
  • "Then I will owe you," the girl answered recklessly. In the land of Chaos, appreciated debts more than money. After realizing what she had said, Adrian jumped up, grabbed her hand in a handshake, and told with lightning speed, "Deal."
  • In a fraction of a second, Lyra signed up, and only God knew what.
  • "What do you need to sign?" Adrian asked.
  • Lyra handed him a piece of paper without saying a word.
  • "Wait for me here," the man said before hiding behind the door.
  • Lyra waited long, sitting with her back against the cold concrete wall.
  • "Why are you sitting with no work," asked the dragon. He looked down at Lyra, "I'll give you a bucket and a mop now so you can do something profitable," he showed off his intelligence.
  • After two hours of talking to the door knocker, Lyra could bet that dragon, in the past, might be a housekeeper. She decided to share her thoughts with him.
  • The dragon blew steam from his nostrils and spoke majestically.
  • "I, by the way, was the best valet."
  • "And how you became a door knocker?" the girl quipped.
  • "There are oversights that can't be forgiven," the door knocker said, somehow devastated.
  • Lyra got up and wanted to ask for more details. But at that moment, the door opened and hit her sharply on the forehead. She lost her balance and stumbled back. Again, thanks to Adrian's partial time-freeze spell, she didn't fall on her back and hurt her tailbone.
  • "You know, if you continue like this, I will quickly get used to being your savior," he said sarcastically. A smile bloomed on his face, and he held a note in the Headmaster's legible handwriting.
  • "It's a success!" Lyra rejoiced. "But how?"
  • "I'll tell you later," Adrian said, apparently hearing her last question out loud.
  • He handed the sheet of paper to her, turned her body to the stairs, and, cheekily slamming her hand on her ass, announced in her ear:
  • "Now get out of here before anyone notices." And she ran until Adrian gave her a second clap.
