• Violet shook her head lightly. "Nothing. You just misunderstood—I'm not that close to Lucien, so I'm afraid I can't help you."
• Pearl, still unwilling to give up, tried to cozy up to her. "Violet, you're underestimating yourself. Let's be friends. Then, whenever there's a Davis family event with Mr. Lucien, you can bring me along. I'll even pay you for it—how about that?"
