Chapter 6 Should I Take You Away
- Shelby scoffed. “Kyler, you had it coming.”
- Kyler looked at her thoughtfully. “So you're leaning on Donovan now? But I heard he's been quite close to your good friend, Lila, recently.”
- Shelby was unwilling to engage in further conversation, shrugging off his hand. As soon as she turned around, she was hit by a wave of dizziness. Then, her body went limp and she lost consciousness.
- At the Mayer residence, Donovan was nestled on the couch, his eyes tightly shut, with an arm draped over his forehead.
- The hospital mentioned that it was challenging to find a suitable heart source.
- If Lila couldn't find a suitable heart, she would die. Distressed, Donovan tugged at his tie.
- The phone on the coffee table began to ring. It was a call from the hospital where Lila was.
- “Mr. Mayer, Ms. Brock has awakened.”
- Donovan felt a slight relief. He rose to his feet, grabbed his blazer, and headed for the door. But his path was blocked by a black Bentley parked right outside, leaving Donovan with no way out.
- Donovan abruptly pushed open the car door and stepped out, striding toward the car.
- “You sure are bold, huh?” Donovan sneered upon recognizing the man inside the Bentley.
- Kyler licked his lips, his left arm propped against the car door. He tilted his chin toward the inside of the car and said, “I brought Shelby home. She's asleep now.”
- Donovan glanced into the car, noting Shelby sleeping in the passenger seat. He quickly withdrew his gaze and flashed a faint smile at Kyler. “Since she's asleep, you could have taken her home. Why bring her to me?”
- Shelby's eyes fluttered open only to snap shut immediately, a sour sting in her eyes causing tears to flow out.
- Kyler cocked his head. “Are you sure, Mr. Mayer?”
- Donovan asked, “What do you think she is to me?”
- Once he finished speaking, Donovan turned and got into the car, quietly observing Kyler who was still standing outside.
- Kyler found it amusing. He stooped to get into the car, making way for Donovan. In no time, the car had vanished without a trace.
- Shelby slowly opened her eyes, unbuckling her seatbelt to get out of the car when Kyler grabbed her hand. “You're sick.”
- His voice was soft, and Shelby remained silent.
- He turned his head. “Do you want me to take you away?”
- Shelby pushed his hand away and got out of the car. Kyler lowered the car window and called out, “Shelby, he doesn't care about you at all. I heard that Lila has regained consciousness. He's definitely at the hospital visiting Lila right now. If you don't believe me, get in the car and I'll take you there.”
- “It has nothing to do with me.” Shelby stated, her back straight as an arrow. She then made her way into the Mayer residence.
- For reasons unknown, Kyler felt a disquieting restlessness in his heart, as if something was about to happen.
- At the hospital, Lila lay on the bed, having shed her tears. Her eyes and nose were tinged with red.
- “Donovan, three years ago, I had a day when I felt a discomfort in my heart. I couldn't catch my breath, so I went to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor said I had myocarditis because I didn't take a severe cold seriously. I had been taking medication for several years, but I never expected it would lead to heart failure. Tell me, do I have very little time left?”
- Three years ago, she had a severe cold.
- Donovan closed his eyes, reminiscing. That fateful, rainy night when Lila had saved him, only to fall terribly ill the very next day. She had been burning with fever for three whole days.
- It was because of him that Lila had ended up this way today.
- “You won't die,” Donovan reassured. Lila clutched his hand and wept heavily. “But it's not easy to find a heart source.”
- Night had fallen.
- Shelby heard the sound of the door opening while she was in a state of semi-consciousness. She groggily tried to get up, but before she could even sit up, she was pressed down onto the bed.
- The scent of alcohol was strong on the man, but it wasn't unpleasant.
- The moonlight from outside filtered into the room, allowing Shelby to clearly see the man's face.
