Chapter 5 Retribution Has Arrived

• Shelby's phone began to ring. She wiped the sweat from her forehead and held the phone up to her ear.
• “Shelby, did you ask Donovan for money?” Maggie's voice came from the other end. Shelby, clutching her stomach, sat up.
• Her lips were pale, and her eyes lacked sparkle. “I'm not going to ask him for money.”
• “Then why don't you ask Kyler? Doesn't he like you?” Maggie was getting anxious, her voice suddenly sharp. “Can you bear to watch your father die of illness?”
• Shelby bit her lip, her fingers tightly clutching her clothes. Her eyes were icy cold. “Anyone who didn't know better would think you were so in love with my father,” she said.
• Maggie's breath hitched, her brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
• Remembering what Kyler once held in his hands, Shelby dabbed at the corner of her reddened eyes and said, “Luke Santiago.”
• Luke was Maggie's lover. Shelby couldn't hear any response from the other end. Within a few seconds, Maggie hung up the phone.
• Elias had urged Shelby to stay in the hospital, but Shelby had refused. She had obtained a large amount of medicine from him, enough to sustain her for a while.
• As soon as she arrived home, she saw Donovan hastily rushing out of the Mayer residence. Shelby rarely saw him in such a state of urgency.
• She wanted to ask him what was wrong, but Donovan didn't give her a chance as he went straight to his car.
• Upon arriving home, Shelby was informed by the housekeeper that Lila had met with misfortune. Lila had always been in poor health, and it was said that she had been diagnosed with severe heart failure.
• Shelby had visited the hospital where her father was staying. She remembered that it was there she had last encountered Lila.
• In the corridor, she saw Donovan pacing back and forth. He was dressed in a black shirt and black trousers, his hair slightly disheveled. His eyes were tinged red at the corners, and his lips tightly pressed together.
• He must be feeling really upset and heartbroken.
• After all, he was so fond of Lila.
• Throughout the years Shelby was with Donovan, she knew he truly loved her. She understood the extent to which he would go for someone he cared about. In truth, she had experienced genuine happiness and fulfillment with him.
• Shelby thought to herself that she was on the brink of death anyway, so she might as well do something for Donovan.
• She hoped that after her death, he wouldn't harbor such resentment toward her anymore. She also wished that if there was another life, she would never cross paths with Donovan again.
• Donovan was urgently searching for a heart source as Lila could no longer wait.
• Shelby signed an organ donation agreement in case of her death and then underwent compatibility testing with Lila.
• After leaving the hospital, Shelby pulled out the medicine prescribed by Elias from her bag and tossed it into the trash bin. She didn't need it anymore.
• “Shelby.”
• Suddenly hearing this voice, Shelby's body stiffened, and then a large hand with distinct knuckles held down her shoulder.
• He had a scar on his index finger, a mark left by Shelby's bite.
• Back then, Shelby stubbornly refused to be with him, all because of Donovan.
• The man approached her. He sported a buzz cut. His eyebrows were thick, his eyes deeply set, and his nose prominent. His features were more handsome than most. He loved to smile, yet his smile always sent chills down one's spine.
• She noticed a menacing scar on Kyler's neck.
• “Kyler.” Shelby closed her eyes.
• Kyler leaned over, flashed her a smile, and then pointed to the scar on his neck. “This is Donovan's doing. What do you think I should do to get back at him?”
• Shelby suddenly remembered a similar conversation with Kyler from three years ago.
• “If you won't get together with me, how would you suggest I take care of Donovan?”
• If nothing had gone wrong for Donovan's family business, Shelby wouldn't have been afraid. However, at that time, the Gosling family business was flourishing immensely, while the former leading company, the Mayer family, had suddenly collapsed.
• Shelby had once watched Donovan, his eyes bloodshot, as he sought out those who were previously on good terms with the Mayer family to borrow money. The prideful man had put away all his pride.
• However, a single word from the Gosling family could have sent Donovan back home, feeling defeated. They could have also doomed Donovan never to be able to turn his fortunes around for the rest of his life.
