Chapter 30 – Heartless

- I walked out of the hospital room, quietly closing the door behind me. The hallway felt too bright, too sterile, after sitting in that dim room with Waylon. My steps were slow at first, the weight of his rasped "thank you" still pressing against my chest.
- By the time I reached the front entrance, the warm night air wrapped around me like a blanket. It smelled faintly of sunbaked pavement and jasmine from the bushes lining the hospital walkway. I hadn’t realized how chilled I’d felt inside until the summer heat settled on my skin.
