Chapter 516 Fixing Every Kind of Pretentiousness
- Hearing that, Callan stood up. “You’re in charge here. First-day assessment.” This wasn’t a place to linger. The ninth son had decent manly manners. He rose and headed straight for the backyard. Kaylee wanted to chase after him, but Matt reached out and blocked her. “Relax, bro. I’ll keep an eye on you for Ms. Ainsworth. No flirting on my watch.” Callan: “…” So that’s why this kid showed up to work for free? “Who the heck are you? What do you even do at the Ainsworths?” Kaylee almost jumped with rage as she watched Callan walk off without a word. Matt snorted. “None of your business. I’ll be watching you anyway. Try getting close to my bro, and I’ll make you regret it.” Kaylee stormed back to her room, fuming. The housekeeper arrived just then. Matt hooked an arm around Mr. Casey’s shoulder, introduced himself, then dug for dirt on Kaylee and her background. Hearing the three were siblings got Matt all interested. He patted Mr. Casey’s shoulder. “Sounds like you need outside reinforcements. Don’t worry. I’m here. Any dirty work you’re too embarrassed to do—dump it on me. I live for the saying ‘bad guys are best dealt with by bad guys.’ I’m the bad guy in the second half.” Mr. Casey: “…” It wasn’t that serious. Still, he arranged a guest room for Matt, right next door to Kayden. Matt sent Zachary a big cash gift, begging him to run to the Moore residence, pack his stuff, and bring it over. The Moores were boring. The Abbott Garden was way more fun. These past few days, he’d figured it out and had to admit it—he couldn’t compare to his ninth bro. He definitely didn’t want Callan stuffing him onto a plane and tossing him back home. That’d kill his freedom. For freedom’s sake, Matt gave in. He didn’t dare entertain any improper thoughts about Sienna anymore. Mostly because it was useless. If his ninth bro wanted to beat him, there’d be no bag over the head—just straight-up punches. He’d probably end up with three broken legs. Once he settled in, Matt formally paid his respects to Melanie and Gloria. The kid had a sweet tongue; in no time, he had Melanie and Gloria grinning ear to ear. Soon it was lunchtime. Since she had a business trip in the afternoon, Sienna came home to Abbott Garden for the meal. Seeing Matt there, Sienna wasn’t surprised at all. Watching him sit obediently on Callan’s other side, she guessed he’d already been tamed. There were quite a few people at the table—rare buzz for the Ainsworths’ dining room. As everyone dug in, Matt suddenly asked, “Didn’t you say there’s another younger brother? Why isn’t he here?” Nobody at the table minded the detail. Kay nodded, unbothered. “Kayden usually eats in his room. I’ll take it to him in a moment.” Matt clicked his tongue. “So he’s disabled. My bad. I didn’t know.” Kay and Kaylee: “…” Kay tried to explain, embarrassed. “Kayden’s not disabled. He stayed up too late last night and is catching up on sleep.” Matt nodded, then shook his head. “You’re a guest in someone else’s home and skip showing your face at the table? That’s rude. At my place, we’d break your legs for that.” Kay: “…” She was about to explain more when Kaylee yanked her sleeve. “Shut it. Can’t you tell he’s picking a fight on purpose?” Matt spread his hands. “I’m just telling it like it is.” “Eat, eat. Auntie, the food at your place is amazing.” “Big garden and great meals—no wonder people never want to leave.” He flashed Melanie a butt-kissing grin. The sisters: “…” They really didn’t get it. They didn’t have beef with this kid, so why did he zero in on them? Either way, the awkward ones sure weren’t Callan and Matt. Melanie was delighted. She’d figured it out—Matt was the perfect foil for the siblings. He fixed every kind of pretentiousness. Sienna relaxed too. With Matt at Abbott Garden, she could travel for work with a lighter heart.
