• The beings rising from the shadows moved precisely, almost too practiced, and were silent. For a split second, I believed we were cornered without escape. Then I noticed the recognizable faces. Men I know, men I rely upon. Though I kept my face blank, relief poured over me. Far from done, this was not over.
• As Jared understood what was happening, his smile wavered. He was not the only one with means; now it was obvious that his intended course of action was not going to be followed. Lucas stood strong, his pistol steady, as the guys I had called from our security squad dispersed themselves about us.
