Chapter 6 Jealousy

  • "Take them to my office," I instructed the driver.
  • "Look, Derick is back." I heard Abby's voice from the living room, I could hear my parents' voices.
  • "Good evening Mom and Dad," my stepmom opened her hands for a hug, I couldn't resist it, I needed it. I hugged her, I went as far as laying down next to her and putting my head on her thigh while she ran her hands through my hair.
  • "How was work today?" She asked.
  • "Tiring." I gave a short reply, my eyes landed on Abby, she was staring at me with a smile on her face.
  • "You brought work back home." Abby pointed out the obvious.
  • "Yeah, thanks I didn't realize," I muttered trying to sound sarcastic she stuck out her tongue, and it made me laugh.
  • "I have loads of paperwork, I decided to bring some back home to kill time with..... Dad, Mom said you fell ill, how are you feeling now?" I decided to change the topic.
  • "I'm feeling much better," Dad replied. I hummed.
  • "Dinner is served," I heard the voice of the maid I forgot we had, mom had sent her away because she wanted Abby and me to live on our own, it was her method of making us stop fighting.
  • We all sat at the dining table, Dad sat at the head of the table, Mom sat beside him on the left-hand side Abby sat opposite Mom, and I sat next to Mom.
  • "Abby you said you applied for a job?" Mom suddenly asked, everyone turned to Abby waiting for her to speak.
  • "Yes, I did. Ruth's company had an opening so I applied, they called me today saying I got the job." She replied.
  • "Today? But you applied one week ago, why did they call you back late?" Mom asked.
  • "Well, based on what they said, they thought they had called me but it turns out they forgot because they were swamped up with work. Ruth has been so busy lately, I haven't been able to get a hold of her so I think they are telling the truth." She explained.
  • "I see... I still don't know why you don't want to work in your father's company." Mom muttered.
  • "Mom we've been over this, I want to work somewhere where the boss doesn't know me plus I don't want to work with him. I already have to deal with him here at home, I don't want to see his face at work too." She pointed at me while talking. I find it cute whenever she does that.
  • "Let her be, let her try other things and if it doesn't work out she can come back to the company. I'm not saying you wouldn't do good in your new company I'm just saying let's keep our options open." Dad said.
  • "I know," she smiled.
  • "There is another thing," she muttered, with the look on her face I could tell that what she was about to say might trigger Mom because she was staring at her.
  • "Alex called, he Uhm apologized..." She trailed. Alex is the guy she was talking with, I thought it didn't work out because she found out he had a girlfriend.
  • "What about Alex?" I couldn't help but ask.
  • "He ended things with his girlfriend, I know I shouldn't accept his proposal because he broke up with his ex but I love him and I know he loves me too."
  • Mom dropped her spoon, she was staring daggers at Abby, "Can you hear yourself speak? You are going to date a man who didn't tell you he had a girlfriend? He was willing to cheat on his previous girlfriend, is that the kind of man you want to end up with?" Mom asked.
  • I couldn't talk, the food in my mom tasted sour. I spit it out on a tissue paper. "Excuse me." I pushed my chair harshly and walked out.
  • "But Mom he has changed, he promised not to ever lie to me again." I heard her say. When I arrived in my room, I quickly shut the door and slid on the ground.
  • My heart hurts, it feels like it's been stabbed. "I'm going to lose her again and it's not to someone worthy of it, I can't believe I'm going to lose her to a scumbag."
  • My tie suddenly felt uncomfortable, I pulled it off my neck and threw it across the room. I stood up, stripped myself naked, and went to the bathroom. I let the water cascade down my skin, it helped to get my mind off her. After taking a bath.
  • I got dressed and went to my study, on my way there I met Abby. "Derick." She called, I passed her not giving her a chance to speak, I was angry and jealous. I heard her sobbing but I decided to ignore it, it was for our good.
  • A few hours into working, there was a knock on my door. "Come in," I said not asking.
  • Abby walked in carrying a cup of coffee, "What do you want Abigail? I'm busy with work." I didn't look up at her.
  • She placed the cup of coffee on my desk and sat down. "Derick, are you angry with me?" She asked.
  • "What do you think?" I glanced at her but quickly looked away.
  • "Trust me, Alex is a change man, he said that he had wanted to end things with her but was looking for the right time. Derick if I could forgive you for bullying me all those years then I can also forgive him right?"
  • I scoffed, it's different, but I didn't tell her that.
  • "Are you done? As you can see I have a lot to do." I don't mean to be cold with her but I've decided to act this way so my feelings for her will completely disappear.
  • Instead of leaving, she walked behind me and hugged me, my breath hitched. "Derick I'm sorry, please can you stop being angry already?" She placed her head on my neck, I could feel her every breath.
  • "Are you sure about this Abby?" I shut the file in my hand, turned the chair to face, and made her sit on my desk while I held her hands, I can't be cold to her for long, I'm way in too deep.
  • "Is he worth it?" I asked.
  • "Yes he is, I believe he is the one for me." She took in her bottom lip, it drove me crazy, the way she sucked on her lip.
  • I pushed my chair back and stood up, I went to my shelf and acted like I was looking for something. "If you've made up your mind, who am I to say otherwise?" I asked.
  • "Can you just tell me you are not angry anymore?"
  • I sigh, "I'm not angry anymore, I can't stay angry at you for long, you should know that."
  • I felt her hands around me, 'when did she get here?' I wondered. I turned and hugged her. I couldn't resist it, after all this, I'll keep my distance.
  • "This is funny, Ruth told me that she thinks you have feelings for me....."
