Chapter 2 Choosing Her Again

  • Taking a deep breath, I broke free from the man's restraint, trying to make my voice sound more steady.
  • "There's a family banquet tonight. Don't be late."
  • After saying that, I returned to my office.
  • As the end of the workday approached, I sat in my swivel chair, watching the clock on the wall—the second hand ticking away, each tick feeling like a hammer on my heart.
  • The sky outside was gradually darkening, with dark clouds rolling in, as if they could fall at any moment.
  • In the silence, I never received that phone call.
  • Feeling weary, I sighed and picked up my phone, dialing Kevin's number.
  • No one answered.
  • After hearing the mechanical busy tone, my hand fell weakly.
  • About to dial again, the unfamiliar number that messaged me a week ago sent another photo.
  • In the luxury car, Kevin was focused on driving, while the woman beside him was taking a selfie, smiling happily.
  • A dull pain pierced my chest.
  • Almost masochistically, I stared at the photo until my eyes stung.
  • Sure enough.
  • Kevin had chosen Tiffany again.
  • Just like every time before, that woman was always his first choice.
  • And I—the legal wife who had endured so much with him—had become someone he could easily give up.
  • I raised my head, forcing back the tears that welled up in my eyes, with a bitter taste in my throat.
  • After a while, I stood up, put on my coat, and went to Kevin's house alone.
  • Kevin’s home was located in the city’s most upscale villa area, surrounded by lush trees and pleasant scenery. Everyone who came in or out symbolized the city’s elite and status.
  • I stood at the villa’s entrance, raised my hand, and rang the doorbell.
  • After a while, the door opened, and the glamorous and exquisite Mrs. Siri stood at the door in a luxurious brocade gown. Upon seeing me, she disdainfully rebuked, “It’s just you.”
  • She swayed her hips and walked inside while I tightly held onto the nutritional supplements in my hand, following her with slightly heavy steps.
  • “Bringing so little with you on each visit… You were pitiful before, and now you’re still so pitiful.”
  • Mrs. Siri glanced disdainfully at the supplements on the floor, her tone filled with contempt. “I really don’t know what my son sees in you.”
  • She looked me up and down, her face sharp. “Kevin is now the CEO, and look at you—still dressed and behaving like a working girl. You’re really not worthy of my son at all!”
  • Mrs. Siri’s words were like a punch on cotton—I didn’t feel any pain, but instead felt like laughing.
  • In the years I spent with Kevin, the people of the Brown family always looked down on me for my unknown origins and humble background. So every time they saw me, they never gave me a good face.
  • They thought I wasn’t good enough for Kevin.
  • But...
  • Who really isn't good enough for whom?
  • As the top heiress of a prestigious family, the only heir, people from here to overseas were trying to flatter me.
  • It’s a pity that I broke with my family for Kevin—a scumbag.
  • Now, thinking back, I really must have been out of my mind.
  • I took a deep breath, no longer caring about the so-called mother-in-law relationship, a coldness creeping up the corners of my mouth.
  • “Auntie, have you forgotten—when Kevin started his business, whose money did he use? Who introduced him to the connections? If it weren’t for me, Lynn, would he have what he has today?”
  • “You keep saying I’m not good enough for Kevin. Then may I ask—was he good enough for me back then?”
  • I raised my chin slightly, not hiding my aura as I confronted Mrs. Siri.
  • Mrs. Siri seemed to have never expected me to dare argue with her. Her face changed in anger, and she slammed the table.
  • “What do you mean by that? Back then, you were just doing small favors. Can you compare yourself to my son now?”
  • “I think you’re far inferior to Tiffany. You have no femininity at all! I really don’t know how my son fell for you!”
  • Kevin arrived just in time to hear this.
  • His handsome face darkened slightly.
  • “Mom, what are you saying? If it weren’t for Lynn, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You should speak to her with a little more respect.”
  • He paused, as if deliberately adding,
  • “Besides, I have no relationship with Tiffany. She’s just my secretary.”
  • No relationship at all?
  • I looked at him as if he were a joke, feeling a churn in my stomach.
  • Cheating with his secretary, thinking he’s hiding it well, enjoying the thrill of an extramarital affair without guilt.
  • Ridiculous.
  • And he even knows—without me, there would be no Brown Group today.
  • Mrs. Siri was so angry that her features twisted, but she had the look of someone who didn’t want to argue with her son, and angrily left the dining table.
  • Kevin took my hand and said, “Darling, you don’t need to take my mom’s words to heart… I’m really sorry about today. I had to inspect a project at the last minute and didn’t have time to tell you.”
  • I just nodded lightly and calmly went to the dining room.
  • The meal was enjoyable in its own way.
  • After dinner, Kevin drove me home.
  • The atmosphere in the car was strangely quiet. I looked out the window at the scenery, feeling calm inside.
  • I noticed Kevin glance at me through the rearview mirror, then speak in a low, magnetic voice.
  • “Lynn, we’re getting married in a month, and tomorrow we’re going to pick out wedding dresses. Tonight, I’ll stay at your place.”
  • We’ve been together for so long, and I’ve always refused to have sex before marriage—so we’ve always lived separately.
  • I used to disagree, and now I disagree even more.
  • I pursed my lips, about to refuse, when Kevin’s phone suddenly rang.
  • Looking at the caller ID, Kevin’s brow furrowed slightly. He subconsciously glanced at me.
  • Then he turned the volume down and answered the call.
  • “What’s up?”
  • After listening to the other end, Kevin hung up with a serious expression and pulled over to the side of the road.
  • “Lynn, I’m really sorry. There’s an urgent matter at the company. I have to go back again. I’ll accompany you next time.”
  • I smiled lightly, didn’t say anything, and got out of the car with my bag.
  • An urgent matter at the company?
  • Could it be that Tiffany has an urgent matter?
  • Knowing Kevin’s hypocritical face, every time I see him acting, I feel disgusted.
  • But it’s almost over.
  • Soon, I will completely kick this man out of my world.
