• "Mama couldn't come. She said she already had a prior commitment for tonight," Sake explained as he arrived—alone, without Lora.
• Jillian offered a small, reserved smile and quietly accepted the bouquet he brought. She wanted to tell him it was fine. After all, he was the only one she truly wanted to see tonight.
