Chapter 5 The Confrontation

  • Veda's POV
  • My face twisted the moment I said his name.
  • Since he left me at the engagement party, I had tried not to utter his name, not even once.
  • The audacity of him to even think of calling my phone.
  • So much audacity!
  • How dare he!
  • “What are you waiting for? Either answer the call or hang up,” Rowan said.
  • I shook my head and hung up, putting the phone back into my bag. Rowan led me down the hall and stopped in front of a golden door.
  • “The doctor is waiting for you behind this door,” he announced calmly, “I'm still giving you the grace of reconsidering your decision,”
  • I sighed. “I thought we were good to go,” I murmured under my breath. “I don't have anywhere else to go. I'm poisoned. I don't have money. I don't have a pack. Alpha Wulfric will frustrate my life by any means to get me back to the pack. I don't have anything to think about.”
  • Without saying a word, Rowan pulled the door open, walking inside the office while I trailed behind him.
  • “Alpha.” A woman dressed in a white robe with dark hair that glittered under the light rose from her seat and bowed.
  • “Sit, Eloram,”
  • Rowan walked around the room, a huge mahogany table settled in the middle of the office, and sat down.
  • “Eloram, this is Veda Blackthorn, she has been poisoned by wolfsbane residue. I want you to treat her and make sure there's not a single one left in her blood.”
  • Eloram nodded, her eyes glued on me. She corked her head to the side, watching me curiously.
  • “As you wish, Alpha Rowan,” she finally said.
  • The office door was pushed open after a short knock and a man who I assumed was Rowan’s beta walked in. His eyes were shifting between everyone in the room.
  • “You can go,” Rowan waved at the doctor, who stood up immediately, her eyes shooting daggers at the man who had just entered before huffing and walking out of the office.
  • “The annual Moon Ball is tomorrow, don't tell me you're not going again this time because you must attend. You're the ruler of this city,” he whispered into Rowan’s ear. “And who is she? I can't pick her scent,”
  • Rowan’s mouth twitched. Moon Ball huh?
  • “Is the Alpha of the Silverbane pack going to be there?” He asked, his finger tapping on his jaw calculatively.
  • I watch them having a full-blown conversation without stopping to acknowledge my presence.
  • “With you in attendance, every Alpha in the city would be there,”
  • Of course.
  • “I'll go.” Rowan replied, “With Veda,”
  • Confusion was plastered on the man's face for a moment before it clicked.
  • Oh!
  • “What do you say, Veda?”
  • “Perfect,” I said coldly. “Let them see what the lost daughter they threw away looks like,”
  • “I am lost,” The new guy said, throwing his hands up. “What is going on?”
  • “Jeremy, this is Veda, Veda, this is Jeremy— my Beta.”
  • ********
  • Before Rowan left the pack house with Jeremy, he handed me an obsidian moon crescent card, only carried by high-ranked Alpha wolves.
  • He also assigned me a she-wolf named Anya to help me settle and go shopping together.
  • I sighed in relief as my back fell on the new bed, my feet dangling in the air.
  • For the first time in years, I finally felt at ease.
  • “Do you need me to get you anything, Lady Veda?” Anya asked, standing five feet away from the bed, the she-wolf tried to maintain her silence.
  • “I want to sleep for a while,” I whispered, “I'll call you when I'm awake.”
  • For the first time in years, sleep came naturally away from the suffocating air in the Silverbane pack.
  • When I woke up, my phone was already blowing up with several messages.
  • The Blackthorns were texting me nonstop.
  • Axel: WHERE ARE YOU, VEDA? COME BACK HOME! YOU'RE AN ALPHA'S DAUGHTER!
  • ME: Out here, treating my head after you slammed a glass on it. Blocked.
  • Jemika(Mom): You can't just leave the house because of a little misunderstanding. You're so rude! LET'S DISCUSS IT.
  • ME: Rude is my middle name. Blocked for being annoying.
  • Blaze: Stop being stubborn; return the shares, or you'll regret it.
  • Veda chuckled, without bothering to answer; she blocked him, too.
  • When I finished blocking them all, my chest felt a sense of relief.
  • I was satisfied for the first time.
  • Their messages were either about my position…. or my shares.
  • Not about her.
  • Silly goose.
  • I threw my phone to the side and got out of bed.
  • “Anya?” I called.
  • The door was pushed open, Anya entered, a tray of fruits in her hand.
  • “My Lady, you're awake,” Anya said, her eyes twinkling as she smiled.
  • “I brought this for you,”
  • I covered my mouth with both palms as I stared emotionally at her kind gesture. “That's so sweet of you, Anya” I murmured, “but you have to drive me to the city center boutique right now, I have to pick a dress for the Ball.”
  • “The Moon Ball is two moonlight away. How about you rest for the day, and we'll go at noon tomorrow?” Anya suggested.
  • I sighed, my eyes on the fruits eagerly. I was hungry, so Anya's suggestion made perfect sense.
  • “Let's do it tomorrow then.”
  • ONE DAY LATER*****
  • I stood in front of Luminara couture with Anya, the boutique known for dressing Alphas and Lunas.
  • I walked straight inside, my struts like those of a model straight and my hips swaying from side to side.
  • “Welcome, Miss,” the sales attendant smiled. “These are this year's enchanted silk-woven dress made specifically for gorgeous she-wolf like you,”
  • “I'd like to try that one,” I said, pointing at a shimmering red dress in the corner.
  • The attendant was about to retrieve it when an annoying loud voice shrieked. “I want that one!”
  • I froze.
  • Of course, Isla.
  • I rolled my eyes and signalled at the sales attendant to continue.
  • “Oh…. It's Veda.” Isla said as she stood beside me. “What are you doing here? This place is for the affluent only,”
  • I smiled politely, showing my teeth. “I didn't know you owned Luminara couture,”
  • “Don't be silly, you know what she means,” Blaze uttered, stepping closer to me, but was blocked by Anya.
  • “I advise you not to come closer,” Anya said, a frown on her face.
  • I leaned towards the sales attendant, her face easing into a soft smile. “I'll take the dress, please wrap it up.”
  • Isla scoffed, her hands on her hip. “You? Pay for this dress? Dresses here cost a minimum of a hundred thousand dollars.”
  • I twirled the glossy black card between her fingers. The Alpha Crest glinted under the light.
  • The whole boutique fell silent.
  • Isla's voice cracked “That's…… that's…. an Alpha's obsidian credit card…. Where did you get it from?”
  • “You steal now?”
