Chapter 125 Shadows Of The Past

  • The scent of new rain and distant wildflowers was carried by the gentle rustle of the wind as it flowed across the wide hills surrounding the Levi Estate. The sun had set, sprinkling amber and gold across the wide sky, tinting the world in hues that looked too beautiful for the shattered conversation occurring within the guesthouse.
  • Dysis sat tightly on the plush beige sofa, her hands firmly gripped in her lap. Still wet from the rain that had pulled her outside earlier, she was wearing a basic cotton jumper that clung to her arms. She looked at her mother, Nani Salmon, who was seated across from her in an old velvet chair that had formerly belonged to Rosie Levi. Nani's hands, resting on her long, tattered skirt, trembled softly. At the nape of her neck, her dark hair, now streaked with silver, was loosely coiled. She seemed older than Dysis remembered, yet smaller, as though life had shrunk her inside.
  • The quiet between them lingered, tense and extended, so thick it could shatter the air itself.
