- The world tilted sideways. Valentina’s heart thundered as the headlights cut out, plunging the truck into near darkness. In the pale glow of the streetlamp, she saw her mother’s face pale, drawn, eyes haunted by too many secrets. The woman’s hand rested on the stock of a rifle, finger curled on the trigger.
- Valentina froze.
