Chapter 15 The Warning In The Dark

  • The night was quiet, too quiet Mira sat curled in the corner of the massive bed, knees hugged to her chest, staring at the flames licking in the fireplace. The dream still clung to her like a second skin, it is pieces looping in her mind, the chains, the garden, Cassian’s voice calling her by another name.
  • She did not notice at first that the air in the room had changed, a faint draft brushed against her skin, even though the balcony doors were shut. The flames wavered, as though a sudden breath had passed through the room. Then came the faintest sound of the scrape of a boot on polished stone.
  • Mira’s head snapped up, a man was standing at the foot of her bed. Tall, lean, with a sharp elegance that reminded her of Cassian, but where Cassian’s presence was all controlled power, this man radiated something far more dangerous and unpredictability. His hair was dark but streaked with silver at the temples, falling carelessly around a face too perfect to be entirely human. His eyes were a startling pale gray, cold as frost and twice as cutting.
