Chapter 4 A Blind Wife

  • I shut the door of Daniella’s room tightly before leaving. I don’t want her to slip away again. She almost got away the other day.
  • Rafael followed me behind as I walked into my office, a half smoked cigarette in his hand.
  • I sat down and he stood in the middle of the room without saying a word, “Is there a reason why you’re making me inhale the stench of nicotine this early in the morning, Rafael?”
  • He quickly put it away before running his hands through his hair in a reckless manner, “Don’t you think that blinding Daniella was a little too extreme, boss?” He said nervously.
  • I chuckled, “No, it’s not. She merely got her wish.” I shrugged.
  • “Still!” He raised his voice before correcting himself, “Sorry, boss.” He apologized.
  • “Do you want to lose your voice, Rafael?” No one raises their voice at me. “You siblings do have an obsession with losing your important abilities.” I pondered.
  • He shook his head, “Then I suggest you control it.” I advised him.
  • “All I’m saying is that Daniella is my sister and I hate seeing her in that condition. Her life is over now. She can’t see a thing. How is she supposed to survive now? That wasn’t part of the plan.”
  • I laughed at the irony, “Part of the plan? What plan? Your sister confided in you about her plans to escape from her wedding with me and you in turn betrayed her trust and fed me all the details. You basically sold your sister to me. She’s now mine to do with as I please. And frankly, I have no problems with having a blind wife. At least there’s no way she’s going to double cross me.”
  • His expression morphed into one of surprise, “You’re just going to leave her like that? But the doctor said her eyesight can be fixed.”
  • “Yes, Rafael. The doctor said but I never agreed.” I shrugged, “I’ll fix her eyesight when I feel like it. If she’s well behaved then there might be a chance of her having her eyesight repaired but if not then she’s practically going to remain as she is. I have no qualms. I’m not complaining, am I?”
  • He struggled to form sentences due to surprise, “But then….how would…”
  • “You may leave now, Rafael. There’s nothing else left to discuss. I’ll call you if I need you.”
  • As soon as he left the doctor walked in, “Sir Luciano, I need to discuss something with you. Can I sit?”
  • “Please have a seat, doc.”
  • “The patient has been stable and is still stable now but she won’t be in a few minutes when the effects of the injection fizzles out. I suggest you expedite the process of finding a donor—-“
  • “I suggest you mind your business. I will handle my own wife, doc. You know your job. Face it.”
  • She swallowed whatever comment was on the tip of her tongue and stood up in a haste, “My apologies, Sir Luciano.”
  • “Get lost.”
  • She left in a hurry as I sat and glared at the door she had exited through.
  • “Fucking idiot.”
  • I thought about the whole situation for a while before grabbing the keys and deciding to go have a talk with her if she was awake by now.
  • I unlocked the door and slowly walked in. The sound of her calm breathing filled the room as she looked peaceful in sleep.
  • Her chest rose and fell as I ran the back of my hand across her cheek. Her perfect white skin is a striking contrast to my olive skin.
  • “Such a pity it had to come to this. You and I together would have been the perfect match.” I leaned down and placed my lips over hers gently. She stirred but didn’t wake.
  • I ran my fingers through her hair before taking a whiff of it. She smelled like peace and calmness.
  • Something I desperately craved. A home.
  • I couldn’t resist the temptation her pink lips served as I kissed her lips once more. My phone rang, disrupting the moment as I wished for the death of whoever was calling me at this particular time.
  • “What now?!” I barked into the phone.
  • “Sorry to disturb you, boss. The job is done. We’ve cleaned up the scene and handled the police. Her parents are asking questions as well and we have our men working on that. She’s been reported to be missing but we had people provide false witnesses and false testimonies of seeing her fleeing town with a lover. They’ll feel guilt and they’ll come begging you soon. Our sources say they haven’t stepped out of their house since she went missing. We have an eye out as well in case they try to make a run for it. What shall we do if they try to run away from town? Shall we shoot on sight? Or perhaps torture them for a few days before putting them out of their misery?” He asked.
  • I breathed out and stared down at her face. So beautiful. So peaceful.
  • “No, Matteo. If you catch them trying to flee the town, get them and don’t hurt a single hair on their body. You’ll wait for your instructions from me. Is that clear?”
  • “Of course, boss. That is crystal clear. We’ll station our men around the perimeters in plain sight and keep you notified of any recent developments.
  • “Please! Please, mother. I don’t want to do this.”
  • My phone still remained glued to my ear after Matteo hung up as I focused on the woman beneath me who was now thrashing around in what might be a violent and unpleasant nightmare episode.
  • “Please don’t make me marry him! I’ll die if you force me into this.”
  • A tear slipped past her eyelids and slowly trailed down her face.
  • How disappointing.
  • She hates the thought of marrying me even in her nightmares. That thought made my blood boil.
  • “Daniela?” I held her shoulders and shook her to see if I could beat the effects of the sedative.
  • She didn’t wake but only stirred in her sleep.
  • I shook her once more and she twisted and turned before waking up.
  • I had seen her eyes after the accident, they looked empty. It was like staring into nothingness. The bandage has been replaced over her eye again after she tore the last one off.
  • “Who is there? Who are you?”
