Chapter 1 One

  • Justina's Point Of View
  • "I, Alpha Jasper Howl, reject you, Justina Hunter, as my mate," he said.
  • At his words, I felt a sharp pain in my heart. I knew it was the mate bond being severed. I clutched my chest and tears filled my eyes. But it wasn't because of the unbearable pain in my chest.
  • It was because of the betrayal. I had given my all to Jasper. My time, love, dedication, and loyalty. And this is what I get in return?
  • A cruel unceremonious rejection? The worst was that I couldn't even understand where I went wrong.
  • I have been having this premonition for a while now. It started when I noticed that Jasper had started turning a little cold towards me.
  • Then he started keeping his movements secret and I suspected he was seeing another woman. I knew the woman must be the reason for his current actions.
  • I never knew it would escalate to this so fast.
  • Tears stung my eyes as I remembered the good times we had shared. I was unwilling to let go.
  • "Who is it?" I asked Jasper, trying to keep my voice from cracking.
  • Jasper looked at me with disdain, his eyes devoid of the warmth they once held for me.
  • "Who's what?" he asked me in a scathing tone, sounding very impatient. It was obvious he would rather be anywhere else than here. But I was determined to know who it was that had turned my sweet Jasper into this cruel, unfeeling monster before me.
  • "Who's the one you have been cheating with? The same one you're leaving me for?" I asked.
  • To my surprise, Jasper chuckled. "Is it any business of yours now? You're a weak omega, I'm a strong alpha. We have no connection whatsoever, and you certainly don't deserve to know any details about my life,"
  • At his words, I felt as though a sharp blade was cutting my heart into pieces. Deep within me, I had hoped he would deny he had another woman.
  • That he would say he was just tired of me, or that he needed a break. No reason but the one truth.
  • That he had been cheating on me.
  • The sob tore from me before I could stop it. My eyes stung from the tears. To my shock, Jasper delivered me a well-placed kick, bringing me to the floor.
  • "You should kneel before your alpha, weak omega," he mocked. "I don't know how you ever got it into your head that there could ever be an us,"
  • With that, he walked away, leaving me crying on the floor.
  • I woke up several hours later. I must have dozed off while crying. I shuddered as I thought of the host of things that could have happened to me.
  • Looking at the sky, I saw the sun was already setting. I frowned as I tried to remember what I was doing out in the open.
  • Suddenly, the memories hit me. Jasper's betrayal. His rejection. The way he had kicked me and left. His mocking.
  • And tears rose to my eyes all over again. I couldn't accept this. I found it extremely hard to let all those years I had dedicated to the relationship go to waste just like that.
  • I got up, determined. I was going to make Jasper see reason one way or the other. We were meant for each other and had been a great couple before he started seeing that other woman.
  • Resolute, I walked to his house and knocked on the door. There was no response, but I refused to give up.
  • After some time of knocking, I finally heard someone at the other side of the door. I stepped back and took a deep breath, mentally rehearsing what to say.
  • However, when the door was opened and I saw the person behind it, the words flew out of my mind, lost forever in the waves of shock that crashed over me.
  • "Olivia," I gasped, my palms flying to my mouth in shock.
  • Olivia was my best friend. She was my only friend. As the omega, no one was willing to befriend me, except Olivia.
  • I had always considered her more like a sister than a friend, and I shared all my secrets with her, including how the alpha was my mate.
  • I never thought she would make a move one day and snatch my mate, and even as I looked at her, I wasn't willing to believe it.
  • But there was no other explanation for her being in Jasper's house, especially with how she looked at the moment.
  • She stood proudly at Jasper's door, wrapped loosely in a towel. Her hair which she usually tied up in a bun was let down to her shoulders and looked very messy.
  • Her body shone with a sheen of sweat. Her lips were swollen. And worst of all, I could see bite and claw marks all over her body.
  • It was obvious what she and Jasper had been up to inside the house. My heart sank and I felt the world tilt.
  • I barely managed to stand, leaning against the doorframe for support as the world spun around me.
  • "Well," Olivia said, smirking. The mockery in her tone was heartbreaking. "You have been so blind I was afraid you would never find out. I'm so glad you did,"
  • I gaped, unable to form a word. Was this my best friend? Which devil had possessed her?
  • "Olivia," I hated the fact that my voice was breaking. The fact that I looked so pathetic. But I couldn't help it.
  • "Why?" That was the only word I could force out as a heavy weight settled on my chest, threatening to crush me.
  • Olivia smirked. "You're too weak to be a luna. What do you think the other packs would think of us if they found out an omega became the luna?" she asked.
  • Suddenly, I couldn't bear it anymore. Turning, I fled. From Jasper's house, from the pack, from heartbreak.
  • I couldn't stop running, as though I could outrun my worries.
  • At last, as the sun rose early the next morning, I collapsed on the floor, totally drained from running throughout the night.
  • Many hours later when I woke, someone was leaning over me. I knew it was a strange wolf and not one of my pack, but I was too tired to care.
  • I felt it would be great if an enemy wolf finished me off. Life didn't seem worth living anymore.
  • *****
  • Three months later….
  • I looked at the calm surface of the lake, considering if it would be deep enough to drown me. But then, I thought of the kind wolf that had taken care of me these past three months and had nursed me back to health.
  • It wouldn't be fair to her if I ended up taking my own life after all her troubles. Sighing, I stepped back.
  • Maybe, it was time to move on and start living. I resolved to put the past behind me and forge a new life.
  • That was the very least I owed Dawn, my new best friend. She was from a rival pack and had every reason to kill me when she found me near the border that early morning.
  • But she hadn't. Sensing a broken wolf, she had taken me home and nursed me back to health.
  • Suddenly, someone laid a palm on my shoulder, startling me. I was relieved to see it was Dawn.
  • "Hey," I said, pasting on a smile.
  • Dawn returned a bright smile. "Want some?" she asked, extending some snacks to me.
  • Then the smell hit me, and I bent double over the lake, retching. But even though my body wracking retches, I felt despair.
  • The wolves never got sick easily. If I was sick now, there could only be one possibility.
  • I was pregnant, and Jasper was the father.
