Chapter 8 Doesn't Know

  • Being a nurse means that you are always needed around the hospital. As much as possible, we are needed, just like the other hospital staff as well. Crazy exhausting most times but rewarding. You know, it feels nice to be able to assist others. It's such an incredible and really satisfying feeling to have them grinning at you and thanking you for the things you do for them. I enjoy being of service to others, but I also find it painful to watch a patient pass away.
  • Because I'm aware that I may help my countrymen, I have aspired to be a nurse since high school. The nurses in the movie Pearl Harbor gave me inspiration because what they did was really daring especially during a war like that. Since I first watched that film, I have yearned to work in the same industry to help.
  • I am a licensed nurse, so look at me now and what I have achieved so far.
  • Another exhausting day came to a close as the hours passed, so I quickly gathered everything I needed to go get Ben. I hopped in my car and headed over to his school. I arrived just in time for Ben to be hurrying out of his classroom. He jumped into my arms and grinned as he did so, so I knelt down. He gives me a firm hug, and I have no doubt that he had a terrific day at school.
  • "How was your first day baby?" I push his hair off his face.
  • "I had so much fun mom! I met new friends and they were all so nice to me so I was nice to them as well! We introduced ourselves and I did not shy away. My teacher even liked my hair because she said it's curly. She said she remembers someone from my hair and my eyes." He began to talk in such a happy tone.
  • I smiled at myself, I'm sure his teacher was also a SatPatter before. A name for a Satellite Patrol fan back in the days.
  • "And this boy named Jason came up to me, we both like chocolate and banana shake mommy!" He breathes with a smile on his face.
  • I smiled at Ben. "That's lovely to hear honey. How about we go grab your all time favorite pizza and pasta for dinner? How's that sound?"
  • "Delicious!" He chimes.
  • Back at the car, the two of us made our way to Johnny's, his favorite restaurant, after walking a little distance. We then bought a vanilla latte for me and a box of pizza. My young son also received a chocolate and banana shake which has always been his favorite smoothie. In our conversation about how his first day of school went, Ben stated that some older girls were glancing his way. I hesitantly smiled as I thought of how sweet and wonderful my six-year-old kid is when he asked if anything was wrong with him.
  • He is a natural born charmer. Like father, like son, indeed.
  • After having dinner together, we went home and watched his favorite TV show, Adventure Time, which became my favorite as well.
  • The following day, I was on night duty in the hospital to cover for my coworker who swapped with me since she was having an emergency. I was busy checking IV bags of the patients then I would rush to the third floor nurse's station because they needed assistance for doing rounds in the presidential rooms.
  • "Randy, huge favor. Could you check the IV bag of the patient in room 202-A?" The head nurse asked.
  • "Yes. Sure I will." I answered with a smile even though I just got on this floor. I guess it is going to be a busy shift.
  • "Here is the medicine she needs to take. Make sure you take good care of her, she's a pretty valuable patient to us."
  • I nod at the word, valuable.
  • I grabbed everything I needed before marching my way to room 202-A. I wonder why she's such a valuable patient to the head nurse, well from the room itself which is a Presidential Suite, I'm sure it's someone with a high profile.
  • I glanced at the patient's medical record, before taking a step inside her room.
  • Wait, this name seems familiar.
  • I grabbed the doorknob and smiled as I took a deep breath in while I began to enter the room. "Good evening!" I smiled, glancing at my watch to check the time.
  • Ten thirty-two in the evening.
  • I walked near the patient's bed and I took a grip tight on the patient's medical record once I saw who the admitted patient was. I was reminded instantly of who it was and I couldn't believe that she was actually here.
  • No wonder her name looked familiar to me. This is Hugo Saintclare’s mother.
  • Anne freaking Saintclare.
  • A bathroom door creaks open, and a light from behind me reflects on the wall in front of me. My body feels as though it has become as rigid as plywood, and my heart sinks. Holy crap I do not at all have a good feeling about this.
  • "Someone came in?" A voice called out and the light from behind me quickly turned off.
  • That voice.
  • That freaking voice.
  • I know that voice. Too well.
  • I know that Essex accent.
  • My heart is racing. No.
  • This can't be. No.
  • "Dear, the nurse just came in." Anne says with a smile as she looks at me. Goodness God, Anne has always looked lovely despite aging now.
  • But that is not the matter now. Because evey though I could not see the man’s face yet, my heart was already thumping so hard that my legs already wanted to sprint out of this hospital room. Well, oh my god. Oh my god. Kill me now! Please be her husband. Please don't be that man who I'm guessing you should be. I thought and inwardly chanted those words in my head over and over.
  • He emerges from behind me and stands on the other side of the hospital bed all of a sudden. I stood frozen in place. Hugo Saintclare, who is in front of me, is dressed in a black suit and has his long, brown hair pulled back. He has both hands tucked inside his pockets. And, holy fuck, he is incredibly handsome and looked more matured.
  • He's much taller and more mature than I remember him being when I last saw him, which was over seven years ago. When Satellite Patrol was still around five years ago, he wasn't the same young man I used to swoon over. He is still unbelievably attractive and pleasant, that much is certain..
  • "Hello." He greeted a single word with his deep raspy voice that made my underwear twist in knots. My heart is beating much much harder and pounding even harder than before. I hope that he can't hear it, that I can feel myself breathing much faster too.
  • What's wrong with me? Relax Miranda.
  • He doesn’t know.
  • He doesn’t know.
  • He doesn’t know.
  • So you better freaking relax, Miranda!
  • "Good evening." He greeted me again with that dimpled smile just like Ben's.
  • Well I’ll be damned but Hugo Saintclare is fucking back.
