Chapter 6 Who's She?
- Alice
- I sat on the bed, my mind racing with thoughts. Why was Xavier so mad? Did I do something wrong? I kept replaying our conversation in my head. I told those men I was pregnant... Was that wrong? Perhaps Xavier didn't want anyone to know that I was carrying his baby. All men are totally the same, isn't it? I should have really known better, especially since I was a divorcee. Trusting men was supposed to be the last thing I should think of.
- My thoughts swirled, making me feel restless. I needed to talk to Xavier, to clear the air. I decided to call him, my heart racing with do. I brought out my phone and hesitated for a moment. What if he yelled at me? What if he replied in his typical arrogant and cold manner?
- I took a deep breath, bracing myself for the worst. I pressed the call button and closed my eyes tightly, waiting for him to answer.
- Xavier finally answered the call, and after a brief silence, I said, "Hello," my voice gentle and subdued.
- "I can hear you, Alice. Just get straight to the point. I'm busy," he replied.
- "I just want to apologize," I began, but he interrupted me sharply.
- "For what?" he asked.
- "For telling those men I was pregnant."
- "Can we talk later?" he said, his tone curt. "Like I said before, I'm busy."
- I felt a pang of disappointment. "Okay, no problem. See you later then."
- As I was about to end the call, my stomach growled loudly, reminding me that I hadn't eaten since morning. Goodness, this was embarrassing! I could only hope that he hadn't heard me, but…
- Xavier quickly asked, "Hold on, are you hungry?"
- "Hmm, no, I mean yes... I guess so," I stuttered.
- "Alright then," he simply said, and ended the call.
- I snarled, feeling a bit frustrated. "Why did he ask if I was hungry if he was just going to respond plainly and end the call like that? He didn't even ask if I wanted to eat or if he could bring me something."
- What a husband I married! I know our marriage was just on paper and all, but couldn't he at least pretend to be considerate?
- "So annoying," I seethed, and my stomach rumbled, vibrating excessively like I hadn't even eaten in weeks.
- As I lay down on the bed, my stomach rumbled again, protesting its emptiness.
- I laughed, rubbing my belly. "My baby must be hungry too," I said to myself.
- While still lying down, I couldn't help but admire the beautiful ceiling above me. The intricate design and elegant chandelier were mesmerizing. I still couldn't believe that this magnificent room belonged to me, Alice Brown.
- Just as I was getting comfortable, I heard a knock on the door. I stood up, wondering who it could be. Was it a member of Xavier's family or one of the workers I saw in the garden earlier? It couldn't be Xavier because the last time I remembered, he said he was busy with office work and whatnot.
- I walked up to the door, trying to peek through the peephole, "Who is that?" I asked.
- A soft, polite voice replied, "It's us, madam. The cooks. We've brought you some food."
- I opened the door to find a tray of steaming hot food. My eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, but I never ordered all of this?"
- "Master Xavier called us and told us that his wife was hungry," the eldest cook, who seemed to be the head chef, replied with a smile on her face. "He instructed us to prepare food for you and bring it to you immediately."
- I felt a mix of emotions: surprise, gratitude, and a hint of warmth towards Xavier. He had been thoughtful and considerate, even if he hadn't shown it earlier.
- "Wow," I said again, smiling.
- The food was mouthwatering, with a delicious aroma that filled the air. After arranging the food on the side table, the cooks left, bowing their heads to me. I had to bow down as well, because I was clearly not used to this lavish lifestyle.
- As I sat down at the table, I felt overwhelmed by the spread before me. I wondered where to start, but my eyes landed on the filled glass of red wine.
- I picked it up and took a sip. The rich wine didn't disappoint; it had a really nice taste, refreshing my palate. "Ugh, this is so good," I thought, savoring the flavor.
- I started eating and drinking, enjoying the meal immensely. The wine was exquisite, and I couldn't help but think that it was even better than the expensive wine my ex-husband, Ethan, and I had served at our wedding.
- As I ate, I felt my hunger dissipate, and eventually, I had to stop, feeling satisfied. I covered the remaining food and headed to bed.
- I fell asleep quickly, but my rest was short-lived. I was jolted awake by a voice saying, "Hey, who are you?"
- I opened my eyes, disoriented, and sat up in bed, only to see a figure before me.
- "Who are you?" I demanded, trying to see the speaker in the blur. "And what are you doing here?"
- "I should be the one asking you that," the person said, her feminine voice resounding.
- As the figure came into view, I saw that she was a young, beautiful, and tall lady. But before I could process anything, she grabbed my hair and pulled me off the bed.
- "Let go of me!" I cried out in pain.
- The lady continued to pull my hair, screaming at me. "Are you some thief? What the hell are you doing here?"
- I felt a surge of pain and fear as she pulled my hair even harder with no remorse. Just as I thought things couldn't get worse, I heard Xavier's voice.
- "Wendy!" he shouted.
- The lady and I turned, and I saw Xavier walking towards us, a look of fury on his face.
- "Wendy, what are you doing here?" he demanded his brows furrowed.
- But before he could get an answer, Wendy pushed me back onto the bed, held Xavier's arm, and said, "He's my fiancé. What are you doing in our room?!"
- My eyes widened in shock, and I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Fiancé?
