Chapter 10 I’m Here for Mr. Tang

  • “I…” Lin Cheng’s jaw went slack.
  • Pei Ruo’s brows wrinkled slightly, then turned hard as if she understood what had happened. “If Mr. Tang isn’t here, I’m afraid that I won’t be handling this case.”
  • “He’s here! He just went back to the school to retrieve something; he’ll be back soon!” Lin Chuchu collected herself, then uttered in a voice wracked by sobs, “I’ll call him now!”
  • Pei Ruo nodded slightly, not really bothered.
  • Lin Chuchu hurriedly fumbled for her phone and dialed Tang Yin’s number, but she barely heard the caller ringtone before the call was disconnected.
  • The three beeps of the busy signal took Lin Chuchu by surprise.
  • “He should be on his way back now. Let me try a few more times…” Lin Chuchu forced a smile onto her face even as she wallowed in regret. She wouldn’t have chased Tang Yin away if she’d known that he could engage such a lawyer!
  • The caller ringtone went off again, only to be disconnected immediately for the second time.
  • At this time, Lin Chuchu grew frantic.
  • Wu Min walked up to her daughter and fretted.“That child, Tang Yin, how could he be so rude?”
  • “Why don’t you tell me why Tang Yin would do such a thing? Would he ignore you if the two of you hadn’t treated him that way?!” Lin Cheng somehow mustered the courage to turn back and roar at Wu Min.
  • Wu Min flinched and tears welled up in her eyes. Earlier, she and her daughter had chased Tang Yin off and even wanted to withhold his pay, so why would he still bother with them now?
  • Beep beep beep…
  • Lin Chuchu’s face finally crumbled when her call was disconnected yet another time, her tears immediately spilled from her eyes.
  • How could she not know that Tang Yin didn’t want to bother with her?!
  • “I’ll take my leave first if you can’t contact Mr. Tang. You may give me a call when you do manage to contact him.” Pei Ruo put on a professional smile. Though it was still a smile, it was cool, emotionless and detached.
  • In other words, she wouldn’t handle the case without Tang Yin around!
  • Lin Chuchu collapsed onto a chair before lying against the table and cried.
  • Pei Ruo only nodded and turned to walk out.
  • “Hang on, let me try to make another call!” Lin Cheng hastily stopped her and looked at her beseechingly.
  • Pei Ruo hesitated for a moment and exasperation glimmered in her eyes. “Then I’ll just wait for a little while longer.”
  • “Okay, okay!” Lin Cheng answered hurriedly, turning to pick up his phone and dial Tang Yin’s number.
  • The caller ring tone had just started blaring when the call was connected.
  • “Uncle Lin, what is it?” Tang Yin’s voice rang out over the phone.
  • At the sound of his voice, a flash of excitement lit up on Lin Cheng’s face and Lin Chuchu sat up immediately to stare at her father’s phone.
  • The expression on each person in the room shifted, but none more than Pei Ruo’s as the cloud lifted from the now sunny smile on her face the instant she heard the call connect.
  • “Tang Yin, err…” Lin Cheng was filled with uncertainty. He knew that he’d done Tang Yin wrong, so he could only plead beseechingly. “Tang Yin, there’s someone over here who wants to see you…”
  • “Who is it?” Tang Yin asked.
  • “She says her name is Pei Ruo and that she’s from Xihe Legal Consultancy…” Lin Cheng hastily informed him.
  • “I don’t know her!” Tang Yin replied.
  • His voice had just ended when Lin Chuchu got ticked off. She came here looking for you, yet you’re saying that you don’t know her?! What are you thinking?! Do you really think that you’re a hotshot?
  • The thought had just formed in her mind and Lin Chuchu was about to burst out in anger when Pei Ruo spoke.
  • “Mr. Tang, Mr. Miao sent me here. There are a few issues I need to discuss with you in person. I hope you can find the time between your busy schedule to come here and meet me…”
  • Lin Chuchu watched in shock, unable to believe that a loser who worked in their small eatery was actually being shown such respect.
  • “I’m going to shower first. We’ll talk about this after,” Tang Yin threw down before hanging up.
  • “Yes, of course!”
  • Pei Ruo bent her waist and replied even though the call had already been disconnected.
  • Her audience wore indefinable expressions, especially Lin Chuchu and Wu Min who had no idea how to describe what they were feeling.
  • What was with that attitude of Tang Yin’s?
  • Moreover, this lawyer, Pei Ruo, isn’t angry in the least after the way he treated her?!
  • “Now, let’s make things clear.” Pei Ruo resumed her professional smile and turned to fix her gaze on Chu Hao. “This is the seventh time Mr. Chu has committed extortion this month. According to the law, you will be sued—“
  • “Who dares to sue me?!” Chu Hao interrupted her as he flew into a rage and slammed the knife onto the table.
  • Pei Ruo threw a glance at the knife but looked unperturbed. “I have already made a police report regarding the situation and I believe that they will send someone immediately!”
  • “My brother-in-law is the director of the department of health!” Chu Hao stormed.
  • “I don’t have a brother-in-law like you!” A middle-aged man in his forties snorted before he’d even stepped foot inside the restaurant and approached Pei Ruo when he walked in. “Miss Pei, I’m so sorry about this. I hadn’t thought that such a thing would happen. You should deal with it sternly and stop this menace from harming the rest of society. I, Chen Zhongting, do not abide such behavior!”
  • “Of course!” Pei Ruo smiled as the police sirens drew up to the restaurant.
  • As she’d said earlier, this case wasn’t a big deal to her at all.
  • Just then, a few police officers walked in and held Chu Hao down.
  • “Brother-in-law, what’s going on?!” Chu Hao called out.
  • Cheng Zhongting’s face was cold and emotionless as if he didn’t know the man calling out to him.
  • Chu Hao might have a mean reputation out there, but his knees buckled when he saw the men’s uniforms.
  • “Brother-in-law, help me…”
  • Chen Zhongting behaved as though he hadn’t seen nor heard anything and walked forward to shake Pei Ruo’s hand instead. “Miss Pei, thank you so much for this. If not for you, I wouldn’t have known that I have relatives who behave like that…”
  • “I’m just doing my job!” The corners of Pei Ruo’s lips turned up slightly.
  • “It would be great if we could set a time for a cup of coffee. May I have the pleasure?” Chen Zhongting smilingly inquired.
  • “There’s no need for that, I’m a very busy person!” Pei Ruo declined flat out.
  • There was a flurry of embarrassment on Chen Zhongting’s face that was hastily replaced with a smile. “Alright, then I’ll leave you to your business. Please let Elder Miao know that I’ll handle this properly when I get back!”
  • “Of course!” Pei Ruo nodded as Cheng Zhongting took off.
  • Pei Ruo stood in the small restaurant and studied it for a while before finding a slightly cleaner seat for herself. She was a busy person and her schedule was packed every single day, but she was willing to sit there to wait for Tang Yin.
  • Wu Min laughed dryly. “Pretty lady, I’ll get you a cup of tea. Thank you so much for this—”
  • “There’s no need! I won’t interfere in the case unless Mr. Tang is here; I’m just waiting for him, so I won’t be a bother for long!” Pei Ruo asserted in a soft voice before pausing for a moment then turning toward Lin Chuchu. “I sense that your relationship with Mr. Tang isn’t all that good?”
