Chapter 3 No Longer a Game

  • A glowing golden icon flashed at the center of the blue screen floating before Christy's eyes.
  • [NEW SYSTEM NOTIFICATION RECEIVED]
  • Christy tapped the glowing prompt with her index finger, watching the interface expand into a wide notification window.
  • [MAIN CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVE UNLOCKED: RETURN TO REALITY]
  • [MISSION CONDITION: COMPLETE THE MAIN STORY CAMPAIGN TO EARN ONE RESPAWN ATTEMPT]
  • [WARNING: DEATH IN THIS REALM IS PERMANENT. NO RESTART BUTTON AVAILABLE]
  • Christy stared at the clean white letters, her pulse quickening as she read the warning twice.
  • "One chance to go back home," she whispered, her hands shaking slightly. "I just have to beat the main campaign."
  • "Are you talking to yourself again, kid?" a woman's sharp voice called out from a nearby shop entrance.
  • Christy turned to see a woman in a heavy apron leaning against a door frame beneath a faded neon sign.
  • "I am just trying to make sense of this screen," Christy said, gesturing toward the floating blue display.
  • "You must be exhausted," the shopkeeper said, wiping grease from her hands with a rag. "I am Chelsea. I run the supply shop right here."
  • "I am Christy," she replied, taking a step toward the shop window. "Do you know anything about main campaign missions around here?"
  • Chelsea chuckled softly, tossing the rag over her shoulder. "You talk strange, Christy. If you are looking for work, the local government officers hire folk for security patrols."
  • "Where do I find them?" Christy asked, leaning closer.
  • "Head down two blocks toward the police station," Chelsea advised, pointing down the dimly lit avenue. "Just watch your step. The alleyways are not safe tonight."
  • [SYSTEM QUERY DETECTED: INVENTORY CONTROL]
  • [MENTAL COMMAND ACCESS ENABLED: CONCENTRATE TO OPEN PANELS]
  • Christy closed her eyes and focused her mind, mentally willing her inventory screen to open. A clear grid appeared instantly in her vision, showing empty equipment slots and zero cash.
  • "It really responds to my thoughts," Christy murmured, opening and closing the map tab with a single mental command.
  • "You keep staring into blank space like that and people will think you are crazy," Chelsea warned, shaking her head.
  • "I am testing something," Christy said, focusing back on Chelsea. "Does physical harm feel real here?"
  • Chelsea laughed, tapping the heavy iron wrench tucked into her belt. "Try stepping in front of a speeding car and you will find out real fast."
  • Christy stepped away from the shop entrance, eager to test her physical limits. She reached up and grabbed the rusted edge of a broken metal fire escape ladder hanging over the alleyway.
  • Christy pulled herself up, testing her grip on the rough, cold metal. She swung her legs onto the lower rung, but a loose bolt suddenly snapped.
  • The iron rung gave way beneath her boots, sending her falling backward onto the hard pavement below.
  • Christy hit the asphalt on her right elbow, a surge of sharp pain shooting straight up her arm. She gasped as raw heat radiated through her joint, her skin scraping against the jagged stones.
  • A red warning flash flickered across her vision, accompanied by an urgent system alert.
  • [DAMAGE TAKEN: 2 POINTS]
  • [CURRENT HEALTH: 98/100]
  • [PHYSICAL PAIN METRICS: 100 PERCENT ACTIVE]
  • "Ouch," Christy groaned, holding her bruised elbow as she slowly sat up on the cold ground.
  • "I told you that ladder was broken," Chelsea said, rushing over to offer a hand. "Are you alright?"
  • "I am okay," Christy said, accepting Chelsea's hand and pulling herself back to her feet. "The pain is definitely real."
  • "Of course pain is real," Chelsea said, frowning as she inspected Christy's scraped arm. "What did you expect?"
  • "In my game, a falling animation never actually hurt," Christy whispered, staring at the tiny trickle of red blood on her skin.
  • "This is not a game, Christy," Chelsea said firmly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "If you get shot or stabbed out here, you will bleed out just like anybody else."
  • Christy looked down at her glowing interface, watching her health bar remain at ninety eight percent.
  • "There are no second chances if my health hits zero," Christy realized, her voice filled with quiet resolve.
  • "Keep your head on a swivel," Chelsea urged, stepping back toward her shop entrance. "If you want to survive in Lower Midtown, treat every threat like it can kill you."
  • "I will," Christy promised, taking a deep breath of the damp city air. "I am heading to the station."
  • She turned toward the main avenue, her determination growing stronger with every step. To earn her way back to the real world, she would have to play this campaign with absolute precision.
