Chapter 2 Welcome to Armageddon
- Christy Helms opened her eyes and blinked against the harsh glare of a distant neon sign. Instead of her quiet bedroom ceiling, towering brick buildings stretched high into a hazy night sky filled with orange smog.
- She pushed herself up from the damp asphalt, her palms pressing against wet gravel and cold puddles.
- "Hello? Is anyone there?" Christy shouted, her voice echoing loudly down the narrow alleyway.
- Her chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, free of the agonizing burn that had seized her heart moments ago. She flexed her fingers, staring at her hands in utter disbelief.
- There was no plastic controller in her grip, no desk in front of her, and no computer screen displaying a blue error message.
- "Hey, lady, are you alright?" a voice called out from the shadows near the street entrance.
- A man carrying a heavy cardboard box stepped into the dim alley light, pausing as he looked at her soaked clothes.
- "Where am I?" Christy asked, taking a quick step forward to balance herself.
- "Lower Midtown," the man replied, adjusting his grip on the damp box. "You look like you just saw a ghost."
- "Lower Midtown?" Christy gasped, her eyes widening as she recognized the rusted fire escapes and cracked brick walls. "Armageddon City? The actual city from the game?"
- "Game? What are you talking about?" the man asked, frowning with deep confusion.
- "I was just in my bedroom," Christy said, pressing her palm against her forehead as her thoughts raced. "There was lightning, a short in my power strip, and then everything went dark."
- "Sounds like you hit your head pretty hard on that pavement," the man said, taking a cautious step backward.
- Before Christy could answer, a bright rectangular light flared directly in her field of vision. The glowing translucent window hovered two feet in front of her face, displaying sharp white text across a deep blue background.
- [SYSTEM INTERFACE INITIALIZED]
- [WELCOME TO ARMAGEDDON, PLAYER CHRISTY HELMS]
- Christy stumbled back a step, waving her hand through the air, but her fingers passed straight through the glowing projection without disturbing it.
- "Do you see that glowing blue square right in front of us?" Christy asked, pointing directly at the bright words floating between them.
- "Who are you talking to?" the man asked, looking at her outstretched arm. "There is nothing there."
- "It is floating right between us," Christy insisted, leaning closer to inspect the clean lines of text. "You really cannot see it?"
- "Lady, you are starting to freak me out," the man said, shaking his head as he backed away toward the sidewalk.
- "Sorry, I am just trying to figure this out," Christy said, lowering her hand as she focused her mind on the floating panel.
- [USER STATUS: HEALTH 100/100, STAMINA 100/100, LEVEL 1]
- [CURRENT LOCATION: LOWER MIDTOWN, DISTRICT 4]
- [EQUIPMENT: CASUAL CLOTHING, 0 WEAPONS]
- As Christy focused on the word Status, the display shifted smoothly, revealing a detailed layout of her personal attributes, current health, and physical condition.
- Focusing her thoughts on the navigation tab caused the interface to respond instantly, opening a transparent map that outlined the surrounding streets of Lower Midtown.
- "Just stay away from the main avenue after dark," the man warned, pointing toward the lit street corner behind him.
- "Why? What is on the main avenue?" Christy asked, turning her attention back to him.
- "Crouch's thugs are patrolling the corners tonight," the man muttered, pulling his jacket tighter around his neck. "They do not like strangers asking weird questions."
- "Axel Crouch," Christy whispered, the infamous antagonist's name sending a cold chill through her despite her racing pulse.
- The man turned around and walked quickly into the crowded street, leaving her alone in the shadows of the alley.
- [SYSTEM FUNCTIONS AVAILABLE: STATUS, INVENTORY, MAP, MISSIONS, PROGRESSION]
- Christy reached out and touched the brick wall beside her. Rough stone felt cold, solid, and indisputably real under her fingertips.
- A sharp pinch on her arm brought a sting of pain to her skin, confirming the terrifying reality. This was no dream, no virtual reality headset, and no video game simulation on a desktop monitor.
- Stepping out of the dark alleyway, she stepped onto the bustling city street. Sirens wailed in the distance as police cruisers sped past rows of flashing neon storefronts and crowded sidewalks filled with pedestrians.
- Now stranded inside Armageddon, she was completely exposed to its real world dangers, and her survival depended on her ability to navigate this living world without a controller or a restart button.
