- The box sat in the center of my desk. Wrapped in a matte-black paper with a blood-red ribbon that someone took their damn time tying. I stared at it for the longest time. My name wasn’t even on it, but I knew it was meant for me. With steady fingers, I untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.
- Inside was a single cream envelope, light and embossed. Kailuxe’s insignia glinted in gold foil, two dragons wrapped around a serpent. A gala invitation. My pulse kicked. There was no message, no name, but I didn’t need one.
