Chapter 1

  • Rey’s POV
  • I stood in front of the city gate, unable to resist loosening my belt.
  • It wasn't my fault - after all, I had been starving in the basement for five whole days, and that meal just now was too much.
  • Today, as usual, my father let me out. Every time my mother returned from battle, he would do this.
  • He said I was a 'useless waste without the spirit of a wolf' and needed strict discipline. Only on the days when my mother returned could I see the light of day again.
  • He would clean me up, change me into decent clothes, and then warn me not to complain to my mother.
  • I always obeyed.
  • Not because I gave in, but because I didn't want my mother, who was fighting on the front lines, to worry about me.
  • And, my father was relatively kind to me - at least he didn't kick out this 'defective' daughter from the tribe.
  • But this time was different.
  • When I assured him as usual that I wouldn't tell my mother, my father actually smiled.
  • That smile sent chills down my spine.
  • "Whatever," he said. "I won't treat you like this anymore in the future."
  • What did he mean? Was it because my mother won the battle for the silver mine against the Nocturne tribe? I heard this was her last expedition. With the weapons made from these silver mines, the tribe would be stronger, and my mother could finally come home.
  • So, was my father finally going to let me go?
  • Just as I was about to ask, I saw my father walking towards the triumphant team with a garland in his hands. "Welcome home, my Luna."
  • I looked forward to seeing them embrace each other affectionately as usual.
  • But the next moment, a flash of silver -
  • "Father!" I screamed and rushed forward, seeing the wound on my mother's abdomen bleeding.
  • "Ella," my father's voice was as cold as ice, the silver knife in his hand still dripping with my mother's blood. "Thank you for everything you've done for the tribe. But unfortunately, you were never the one I loved."
  • "Now that you've finished this battle, you are no longer of use to us. We are releasing the mate bond, so take Rye and leave."
  • "One should be content. You have enjoyed the honor of being Luna for so long, it's been enough good days. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have to part with my true love."
  • It was then that I noticed my father's personal maid, Leila, was holding onto his arm.
  • I always thought she was just my father's maid, but it turns out she was his lover!
  • And Leila's daughter, Evelyn, was actually my half-sister from the same father, and she was only a year younger than me!
  • When my mother was pregnant with me, my father had already betrayed her!
  • "Sixteen years," my father stroked Leila's hair, "I can finally keep you by my side openly."
  • And my mother, a warrior on the battlefield, quickly accepted the reality.
  • She asked, "You don't love me, want to abandon me, I can accept that. But what about Rei? She's your own daughter!"
  • Finally, my father looked at me, "A worthless piece of trash like you deserves to be my daughter?"
  • But my mother exploded, "How dare you say that! You know better than anyone why Rei doesn't have a wolf!"
  • "Mother? What does this mean?"
  • Suddenly, my father laughed, "Tell her, Ella. Tell your beloved daughter the truth."
  • The anger in my mother's eyes turned into pain, "Do you remember the high fever you had at four years old?"
  • I nodded.
  • That was one of my earliest memories - unbearable pain, and the sound of my father's heartbeat as he ran with me in his arms.
  • "That wasn't an ordinary fever," my mother's voice choked, "You were poisoned by a wolf..."
  • Then, from my mother's mouth, I learned a truth I never knew.
  • Turns out, not only am I not a worthless wolfless person, but at the age of four, I already had my own wolf, and the tribe said I was a rare genius once in a hundred years.
  • But one time, when my father was playing with me outside, we were attacked by Rogue, who fed us wolf poison.
  • Both of our wolf souls were injured, and we were on the brink of death, with only one antidote in my grandfather's hands that could cure this wolf poison.
  • My mother loved me very much, but she loved my father, who had a mate bond with her, even more.
  • She couldn't bring herself to put my father behind me, so the antidote went to my father.
  • I staggered back, shocked to realize that the pain that had plagued me for so many years was actually due to my father's negligence!
  • "You won't live much longer, so I'll tell you the truth," my father suddenly interjected, his voice sickeningly cheerful, "Actually, there was no Rogue ambush at that time. I was poisoned by a traitor's plot."
  • "I knew your father had a life-saving antidote, but he looked down on me, the 'nouveau riche Alpha,' and wouldn't give it to me. So I fed Rei this antidote, staged this drama..."
  • My mother let out a painful cry and lunged at my father, but her injured body caused her to fall heavily to the ground.
  • "In the spirit of companionship, I'll give you a chance to escape," the father clapped his hands, and a dozen soldiers emerged from the shadows.
  • "Run towards the Wild Hunt Forest. If you can evade our soldiers for 20 minutes, I'll spare your lives. How about that?" The father smirked mischievously.
  • The Wild Hunt Forest? That place was teeming with beasts.
  • With my mother injured and me being nothing but a useless waste without a wolf, how could we possibly make it out alive?
  • But I had no other choice at the moment.
  • I hoisted my mother on my back and sprinted towards the forest, laughter echoing behind us as they gleefully started the countdown.
  • Torrential rain poured down as we fled into the forest.
  • My mother's blood soaked through my back, her breath growing weaker. "Rey, leave me...save yourself..."
  • "No!" I stubbornly carried her, trudging through the mud. "I will never abandon you!"
  • Strangely, there was no sound of pursuers.
  • Until I ran into a wall of people—
  • Silver wolf head badges gleamed in the lightning. Warriors from the Nocturne tribe surrounded us.
  • The leader knelt down to inspect my mother's wounds, his eyes glowing reddish-brown in the darkness.
  • "It seems," he smiled, "we've caught two lost wolf cubs."
