Chapter 1 The Alarm

  • I woke up to the annoying sound of my alarm. God knows how much I loathe this alarm but I have no choice but to keep it and use it.
  • I sat up from the bed and looked around my room. Everywhere is stuffy. I am the kind of person that keeps things like old equipment, dresses, and shoes that are meant to be disposed of.
  • My apartment is so shabby and small. I have just been managing it because I don't have a choice. I must live here or I live on the street.
  • My mattress screams of disposal but I don't even have the money to change it. I have just been living my life like that.
  • I went out of my room to my toilet and had my bath then after that, I went out of the toilet to my room and opened my old small wardrobe to select my dress for the day.
  • Few minutes later, I was done dressing up. I wore my t-shirt and trouser and got out of my room to my mini kitchen where I cooked my breakfast and also had my breakfast.
  • The thought of seeing the children made me happy.
  • Two years ago, I hated kids. Ever since I became an adult. I hated kids. Their cries, and how they are always dirtying everywhere. I don't even like their smiles. To me, they were frustrating. I still remember vividly how I used to decline carrying my friend's child when she gave birth.
  • Flashback:
  • "Come on, he is just a kid, Sophie." Scarlett said as she carried her baby from me. He just puked on me. It is so disgusting.
  • "What's wrong with that? You will just have to clean it with a wiper or any cloth. Wait until you have your own kid, you will know your hatred for children is so stupid." She said annoyingly.
  • "It's so disgusting.''I said as I almost vomited while looking at the cloth on my clothes.
  • Scarlett took the napkin and cleaned it off my clothes aggressively.
  • "I am so sorry. But I can't just cope with kids." I told her as I stood up.
  • "I was once like you, you know but when I had my precious jewel, I realized I was just so foolish and ignorant of what God has created." She looked at her son with so much love.
  • "You have told me this a thousand times already." I scoffed.
  • "Whatever, So have any company called you yet?" She asked.
  • "No, none has. I am just so fed up." I told her sincerely.
  • "I hope the school calls you." She said with hope.
  • "Which school. I don't understand. I didn't apply for a job at any school." I told her.
  • "Well." She started scratching the back of her head. She does that when she is nervous.
  • "Well what?" I asked her with curiosity.
  • "When I was going to the grocery store, I saw a vacancy notice at the front of a school in that area so I decided to help you apply on their portal. So..."
  • "You know I can't work in a school. I can't keep up with the kids." I said with frustration.
  • "I am so sorry."
  • "What's the grade?" I asked her.
  • "Well it is a kindergarten school." She smiled nervously.
  • "Can you just kill me right now?" I yelled and her baby started crying. She glared at me as went out of the kitchen. Well, I followed her.
  • "You know me. You shouldn't have done that." I said to her,
  • "I know, I am so sorry but I just gave it a try. You are too broke to be rejecting an offer or opportunity." She reminded me of my status.
  • Yes, I have been squatting at my friend's place for like six months now after I left my parent's home.
  • "Yeah, that's true. Thank you for reminding me." I told her.
  • "I didn't mean it like that. J am so sorry.." she was cut off by the opening of the door. Her husband came in.
  • And immediately the atmosphere was tense. No one spoke a word until he decided to talk.
  • "Hello, Sophie." He said as he passed through me to his wife.
  • He kissed her and they exchanged pleasantries.
  • "I will be in the room." He told her as he left the living room.
  • Evan and I were lovers almost four years ago before he decided to leave me for my friend Scarlett simply because I was not able to give him what he wanted.
  • It turned out he even loved her more than he loved me so I had no choice but to let them be.
  • Scarlett knew she betrayed me and she begged me which I accepted.
  • But the problem now is that, anytime I look at this guy. I still remember the moments we had together. It is not even to forget that easily, he was my first love and I haven't even found another guy ever since he broke my heart. So I still have little feelings for me which I am afraid of.
  • Thank God he is always letting me know that he clearly doesn't have anything to do with me again.
  • "Like I was saying..." My phone cut her off.
  • My phone buzzed in my hand and I checked to see the message.
  • "I think they have hired me in that school." I whispered as I stated in the message.
  • "Congratulations." She said joyfully.
  • "Why are you so happy about it?" I asked her.
  • "You got a job?"
  • "So?"
  • "You got a freaking job."
  • "And so freaking what?"
  • "Okay."
  • "I am not going to accept it. I am not doing the job. I can't work at a school, kindergarten or all? How will I keep up with them? I might just kill all of them before I know it." I told her.
  • "You can't do that. You have the softest heart I have ever known. If you don't accept this job, what gives you the assurance that the companies are going to accept it? You need to consider it." She said,
  • "I can go search for jobs for all I care." I said nonchalantly.
  • "Okay. I think you love your broke ass life." She said annoyed.
  • "Whatever."
  • Few days after I started working at the school, I fell in love with the kids. I always admired when a kid sleeps and I always find reasons to love them more.
  • Few weeks after I was hired. I was told to leave the house because of the tense relationship Evan and I had so I did as instructed. I used my first salary to rent a mini apartment.
  • Present:
  • That was a lovely memory.
  • I got out of my apartment and went to the bus stop to catch a bus so I won't be late for work.
  • My phone buzzed and I checked it.
  • My heart sank.
  • I am lagging behind. My expenses are too much. I need money. I need to find more jobs.
