Chapter 617 Invitation to the Engagement Party

  • Immortality? Hazel Sullivan pinched her brows. There’s no such thing as living forever. Back in ancient times, emperors chased it like mad—swallowing “elixirs” from random mystics, sailing off to some fairy isle—only to fail and die badly in the end. Why is Old Mr. Ye so obsessed with this? Hazel remembered locking eyes with him just now. There was a dark, feverish edge in his gaze that made her uneasy. She could feel his chill and hostility toward her, most likely because of his granddaughter Ye Youxuan. A warning bell rang in Hazel’s head. Today’s selection might not go smoothly. Even her plan to visit the Academy of Sciences was going to be a slog. But Mom’s second treasure box was inside that Academy. She had to get in and take it. No one was going to stop her. A few familiar faces came up ahead—Liya Yuntong and some girls from T University. They clustered around Yuntong like she was a princess. “Wow, Yuntong, you’re really getting engaged to Mr. Luellen?” “He looks so cold and untouchable. Guess you’re the only one who can reel him in. We’re so jealous!” Fan Qi and the others caught their chirping. Fan Qi muttered, “Liya Yuntong’s getting engaged to Mr. Luellen?” “Probably. Lately all of Regalburg’s been buzzing about a Luellen–Liya match. Not surprising.” “Mr. Luellen looks like a ‘keep out’ sign—total abstinent vibe. Didn’t think his taste was that basic. Into that pure-lily type, huh.” Liya Yuntong spotted Hazel and strode over, bright with pride and glee. “Hazel, what are you girls chatting about? My wedding date with Zachary? That’s right—we’re getting engaged. The date’s set. Three days from now.” Three days? Hazel felt like she’d finally recovered from that heavy illness, but the engagement date still stabbed at her. She hadn’t expected them to rush it like this. “Zachary said he wants it fast, and three days from now is a lucky day. Hazel, I’ll send you an invitation. Come celebrate our engagement, okay?” Yuntong took in the faint blanch of Hazel’s face and felt a wave of pure satisfaction. Ever since Hazel showed up in Regalburg, she’d stolen all the spotlight, leaving Yuntong dim and dull. Getting engaged to Zachary Luellen had another purpose—shoving Hazel back to where she belonged. How could some wildflower from a forgotten corner compete with a born star? Hazel didn’t give anything away. Her clear, bright eyes rested on Yuntong. “Congrats, then. I’ve congratulated you to your face, so no need to send the invite.” She turned and left. Watching Hazel’s slender figure slip out of sight, Liya Yuntong bit her lip. Hazel’s cool, indifferent tone felt like punching into cotton—no impact at all. But her smile soon curved again. Hazel was probably off to prep for the Academy of Sciences selection. Shame, though. She was never getting in. ... Hazel forced herself to forget Zachary Luellen and Liya Yuntong’s engagement. She already knew Zachary hated her to the extreme. That night at the club said it all. Her Mr. Luellen was gone. Now there was only Zachary. No point wasting tears on him.
