- Lastly I got my new birthday dress out of the wardrobe, the one that Owen and I had gone shopping for in the week. It had cost a packet but Owen had insisted and it really was a fabulous dress. A black, long-sleeved silk sheath, shot through with silver thread, that came to mid-calf, with a slit up one side to mid-thigh. So I would be showing some seamed stocking this evening! It also had a plunging neckline that showed a nice bit of cleavage. I slipped into it and zipped it up, relishing the feel of the silky material. It would be my son who unzipped it later, I hoped, if I hadn't scared him off by then. Then it was back to the mirror. Yes, I told myself. That's about as good as it gets. Sophisticated, a bit tarty? Yes, that was the look I wanted. I fastened Jodie's jet necklace around my neck and took my hairband off; I'd had my hair in a ponytail while I put my makeup on. Now I let it fall loose, brushing it until it shone. I pulled a pair of three-inch heeled court shoes out of the bottom of my wardrobe and slipped them on and then I was ready.
- Owen's reaction to my appearance as I swept into the lounge was suitably satisfying; he couldn't stop goggling at me! Then he grabbed me and tried to kiss me but I wriggled away. 'You'll spoil my makeup,' I told him and he pretended to be grumpy.

The stubble was my suggestion and it was two-pronged. I knew it would add ten years to his apparent age and I wanted us to be seen tonight as a couple.
