- The dinner was a success, so far as I was concerned. I served it on time in the formal dining room with the huge oak table that can seat twenty diners, and all three courses were well received. Mum was in fine form as the queen bee, controlling the conversation, laughing delightedly at the smallest joke and lavishing praise on every aspect of the evening except for the cook. She seemed to me to be particularly attentive towards a man in his twenties, sitting next to her, who was called Alex. Alex Mason, I think. He was dressed in a well-fitting tuxedo and he looked slim and strong. He wasn't bad looking either, I decided, in a slightly cruel way.
- By eight o'clock the meal was over and the guests had repaired to the lounge for coffee and liqueurs so I got on with the mammoth task of clearing up. I was exhausted, having been on my feet all day. By ten o'clock, all the guests had departed apart from Alex Mason. I went into the lounge to collect the empty coffee cups and glasses and he and mum were sitting together on a sofa, sipping from brandy balloons.
- 'Well done, Louise,' my mother smiled at me as I went around the room with a tray. 'Don't you think she did a good job with the food, Alex?' Praise from my mother was rare indeed, but when it came it was usually in front of other people so that they could see what a generous and kind person she was and what an accomplished daughter she had raised, mostly on her own.
