- 'Wow,' I gasped, gawping into the open space. Inside was unlit but in the light from the cloak cupboard I could see a little room with a steep staircase, more like a ship's ladder, going up into the darkness. 'What is this place?' I whispered, but Maggie just held a finger to her lips. She switched on the flashlight and I followed her into the room behind the wall, which she pulled shut, showing me the release mechanism on the inside of the door which was operated on the other side by twisting the light-switch. Without another word she began to ascend the ladder and I followed.
- It went up about twelve or fifteen feet where the space opened out into a carpeted passage about six feet high and half as wide. I was a bit disorientated but I followed Maggie and the flashlight as she moved silently along for about ten yards to a little door. She opened this and ducked inside and I followed. When we were both inside, Maggie closed the door and flicked a light switch and I blinked in the sudden light. We were in a space about six feet wide and high and about twelve feet long. It was carpeted, like the corridor. The walls were panelled wood, roughly done, and, incongruously, there were pictures hanging from them, mostly rural watercolours. Along one wall there was a bench and there was also a small, upholstered chair and a table. An empty bookcase completed the furnishings.
- I looked around, amazed, at my surroundings as Maggie stood in the centre of the room and regarded me with a faint smile. 'You can be safe here,' she whispered. 'Your mother knows nothing about this place.'
