- This was the thing that Kael had not fully understood until the moment the resonance fired — that the First were not an army that could be routed, not a force that could be spent. They were a fact. The fact of unmade-ness, ancient and self-regenerating, the original argument against the existence of everything. The resonance had not destroyed them. It had pushed them back, hard and far and with a force that had never been applied to them in fifteen thousand years of trying.
