- The storm had moved inland, but the air outside the Kane Manor still smelled of rain; cold metal and ozone, like the world had been washed clean. Inside me, nothing felt clean at all.
- Since the confrontation, days had blurred into a colorless stretch of hours. Dominic kept his distance. I kept my door locked. Meals arrived untouched and returned cold. I couldn’t bear to see him, and he didn’t try to see me. His silence had been an answer, and every minute that passed pressed that answer deeper into my bones.
