Chapter 5 The Warning
- Every muscle in Evelyn's body coiled tight as a spring.
- Clara was right there. Thirty feet away. Maybe forty. Close enough that Evelyn could count the ribs visible through the gray dress. Close enough to see the bruise-yellow shadows under her sister's eyes. Close enough to see the way Lily's small fingers dug into Clara's collar, knuckles white, the child's face pressed into her mother's neck as if trying to disappear into her.
- Evelyn's feet moved before her brain caught up. One step. Two. Toward Clara. Toward that gray dress and that crescent scar and that shake of the head that screamed louder than any voice.
