- The mattress was soft, but the instant Emeric threw me onto it, pain slammed through me—body and heart. I clenched my teeth, tried to sit up, my voice shaking, and still couldn’t help but yell, “Emeric, don’t you dare lose it in front of me!”
- “Shut up.” He leaned in. His breath was damp and cold, and it crushed the air right out of my lungs.
