• My eyes narrowed, the warning already forming in my chest. Before I could speak, a shout broke from the Timber Quarters beside us. The sound was sharp, frightened, and wrong. My body reacted before my thoughts did. I crossed the short distance in a few fast strides and tore the door open.
• Corvin and Fen came out hard and fast, dragging a teenage boy between them. His boots scraped across the floor. He struggled for a second, then his strength gave out and his weight sagged in their grip.
