Chapter 77

  • Dawn slid slowly across the fortress, a dull blade of light cutting through the mist. The training field below was still scarred from the night before; cracks traced pale runes across the ground, the air above them faintly alive with the residue of her power. A single gull cried somewhere beyond the cliffs, and then silence swallowed it whole.
  • Ariana stepped into the ring barefoot. The stones were cold, the kind of cold that bit deep enough to make her feel alive. She flexed her fingers, searching for calm, but her blood hummed too loudly. The voice inside her—the second pulse she now lived with—never slept. It throbbed softly, whispering its ancient rhythm: mine, ours, power.
  • Demion stood at the edge of the field, his outline dark against the growing light. His shirt was rolled to the elbows; scars crossed his forearms like pale constellations. He had been there before she arrived. She knew because the sand already bore the print of his boots, pacing in perfect circles.
