Chapter 2099 First Day at Work
- Lacey had been a little sour at first. She felt that back then, not only did Bertram like Estelle, even Estelle’s daughter had stolen her own son’s spotlight. Hearing what he said now, she shot him a withering look. “You think I need you to spell it out?” Bertram didn’t answer. He went back to chess. This round, he gave Lacey a head start again, so she finished first again. She grabbed his hand and shook it, thrilled. “See that? I won again. Ha!” Bertram got yanked off balance and tipped forward onto her, and their lips crashed together. Lacey’s eyes flew wide. She hadn’t seen that coming at all. She panicked and tried to push him away, but the man wouldn’t budge. A second ago he’d seemed weak as a kitten; now he was a brick wall. She couldn’t move him at all. Bertram shot a look at the little guy. The kid got the hint and let out a huge yawn. “I’m sleepy. I’m going upstairs to bed. Daddy, Mommy, good night!” Like the wind, the little one sprinted for the elevator. The other housekeepers took in the scene and tactfully slipped out of the living room, leaving the space to the Master and Ms. Lacey. The moment Bertram saw his son step into the elevator, he bit down on Lacey’s lips. Lacey raised a hand to smack him, but he didn’t care, kissing her deep. They didn’t break apart until they were both breathless—and this spot really wasn’t the place to keep going. He let her go. Lacey jolted upright from the floor, lifting her hand to her mouth. Bertram was panting hard. A certain part hurt like hell too. His gaze burned as he looked at her. “Upstairs.” His voice was low and hoarse, rough around the edges. Sinfully sexy. Lacey’s heart gave a shaky thump. She couldn’t believe this man could be that tempting. He took a few steps back and turned away. Bertram knew she wouldn’t stay. Getting to kiss her twice tonight? He was already pretty satisfied. Hopefully he could take it further next time. He stood and called, “Someone.” Only then did the staff dare to come out from the first-floor quarters. “Sir, what are your orders?” “Have someone follow Ms. Lacey and make sure she gets home safe.” “Yes, sir!” A housekeeper left to alert the driver and bodyguards. Bertram sat where he was and glanced at the spot she’d just occupied. The way she’d looped her arms around his neck—just like the way she used to be when she was happy. Not a single thing had changed. He kind of missed that version of her. He liked her fire. … Early the next morning, Crystal drove to the company. She’d studied design and had joined a clothing company as a member of the design team. She handed in her medical checkup form, picked up her employee badge, and HR led her to the design department. The design director showed her around and introduced her to everyone. Then he turned to her. “You’ve been out of school for a while. No jobs all this time?” Her resume had zero work experience. Crystal didn’t really have a resume worth showing. Her past work had nothing to do with this line of work. If she wrote down who she used to be, no company would dare hire her. She nodded once. “Yeah. I was a full-time homemaker, so I’ve never worked.” “Divorced?” “We broke up.” Crystal kept her tone flat, giving him whatever answer would do. Chen Tao nodded. “From now on, you’ll follow me. Be my assistant.” Crystal frowned. “Aren’t I a designer?” She’d applied for a designer role, not the director’s assistant. She didn’t have much workplace experience, but she wasn’t dumb. Those are two different jobs. Most people would’ve fired her on the spot for being that blunt and ‘not following orders.’ But Chen Tao found her situation a little pitiful and didn’t want to make it hard over something small. “Crystal, you’ll learn a ton as my assistant. You could become the deputy director later. If I get promoted, you might even end up the director.”
